where is st annes?
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 16:17 BST (UK) »

I have finally found evidence of my Gt  Grandmother prior to her marriage.
Ancestry gives her in 1861 census as being born ic.1853 born in St Annes. Can anyone tell me where that is

Many places shown as Middlesex are really in London which, at one time, fell wholly within the boundaries of the County. The most likely is St. Anne's Soho and click below for more information:

Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa.

Thanks for that Hankstaple. My gt grandmother was casual about her birthplace and her whereabouts (i am beginning to think). In 1901 her census return (or rather my gt grandad's) gave her birthplace as Newport Market West, which I believe was part of a cattle market and abbatoir associated with Smithfield, which is in that general area

The old Newport Market was in Soho, as was St. Anne's. The market went a very long time back - perhaps about 1880. Cool
