Wrawby parish records
« on: Friday 20 June 08 22:13 BST (UK) »

Hi,
Does anyone have access to Wrawby Parish Records?
I would like to know the details of the marriage between John Asquith and Mary Smithson on 27 May 1766.
This might be all the information that there is, but if it does indicate profession of their birth parishes that would be great.
Thanks

The only information I could find was a baptism for John Asquith, 5 Sept 1759, in St. Mary Le Wigford, which is close to Wrawby. His parents were Joseph and Mary.

Thanks for having a look for me!
It is not the right one I'm afraid. John Asquith was from Kildwick parish Yorkshire. I am pretty certain now that it was Mary Smithson that was a Lincolnshire girl. I have obtained the banns which were read in Kildwick and that is where the Asquiths hail from. It gives Mary's parish as Wrawby. I wonder whether you have a baptism for a Mary Smithson around about 1745?

Your help is much appreciated

Hi Sally, the most likely baptism for Mary Smithson is 23 Sept 1749, at Great Coates, Lincolnshire. This is fairly close to Wrawby Parish. This Mary was the daughter of William and Jane.Sorry if this isn't the one, but it was worth a try!

From the Wrawby parish marriage register:

John ASQUITH of the parish of Kelswick in the County of York and Mary SMITHSON of this parish were married by Banns in this parish church of Wrawby this twenty seventh day of May 1766 by me W. HARGRAVE, vicar. This marriage was solemnized between us John ASQUITH, Mary SMITHSON (X) her mark.

In the presence of Thos MARSHALL (?) and Sarah BERNAD(?)

Incidentally Great Coates is over 16 miles away from Wrawby - a fair distance in those days. St Mary Le Wigford is in Lincoln, and that is nearly 27 miles away from Wrawby.

Thank you so much for that! That is just the information that I need. John Asquith (my distant relation) seems to have been a land agent for Ann Currer (a wealthy lady from Kildwick) who married William Hudson of Cadney. Mr Hudson died leaving Ann with lands within the Wrawby parish. I am guessing that John Asquith travelled with her down to Lincolnshire and met Mary on his travels. They then moved back to Yorkshire where they had a huge family.
If we have the correct Mary Smithson (ie from Great Coates), she would have been a minor on the occasion of her wedding!
Really appreciate your efforts!
Warmest regards

St Mary le Wigford is a parish in Lincoln (City), so is actually some distance away from Wrawby (Brigg).

thanks Geoff,
That is not the right John Asquith, he was from Kildwick in Yorkshire and not Wigford! It was Mary Smithson who came from Lincolnshire - possibly Great Coates!

Many thanks for your interest!
