Need bigger windows

Hi all
As an example , when i get an email telling me ive had a reply to a post and to click on the link which takes me to the reply,the window only opens small so i have to maximise it every time so can someone tell me how to change my settings to make them open bigger. I know its probably very simple (bit like me) but unless you know its not  so easy .........is it ?

Hold down the left control button on the keyboard
holding down the left mouse button drag the corner of the window to the size you require and then release both the mouse button and control button.

The next time you use that application the window should be the size you have just set.
