Hi there,
I am researching Elliot and Hay families in the Hawick area - but nothing with the names you have listed so far. I have a copy of the 1851 census for Hawick - if you want me to look up any names for you, just let me know.
Cheers, Clare

Thank you, Clare - those are basically the names that I have, not so much background details.
I do know that my GGGGrandmother, Jean Knox, was a prominent citizen in the area, and that a comprehensive obituary was printed about her in 1877.
If you come across any info, that would be great!

Hi there,
I have found the following information in the 1851 census for Hawick, for the name Knox.
William Knox (poss son of David and Mina?, borne out by name of eldest son...) Mickle Whitlaw, Hawick William Knox - Head - married - 54 - Farmer (of 140 acres employeing 3 farm servants) - Roxburgh, Hawick Nancy Knox - Wife - married - 40 - Farmer's wife - Roxburgh, Wilton David Knox - Son - unmarried - 28 - Farmer's son - Roxburgh, Hawick Margaret Knox - Daughter - 19 - Farmer's daughter - Roxburgh, Hawick Ann Scott - Servant - Unmarried - 20 - House servant - Roxburgh, Newcastleton James Elliot - Servant - Unmarried - 18 - Farm Servant - Dumfries, Langholm John Douglas - Servant - Unmarried - 14 - Farm Servant - Roxburgh, Hawick
I am also guessing by Nancy's age she was a second wife or lying about her age!
Unfortunately, I can't find Jean Knox in the same census under the names Knox, Adie, Thomson or Wilson. She must have been in a different town when the census was taken. I also couldn't find Jane, William or Elizabeth that you listed below Jean Knox, but then I wasn't sure which surname they had, given that it looks like Jean was married 3 times.
If there are any lookups you want - just give me a shout.
Cheers, Clare

Clare - I think you might be right about William - his age puts him in the ballpark as being Jane's brother, and son of David and Mina.
Jane, William and Elizabeth are all children of Francis Wilson and Jane Knox. I have info that Francis and Jane were married c1829 in Hawick. From Jane's death cert, Francis was a Master Bootmaker and Shoemaker Master.
Jean married John Adie c1841 (November, I think). so in the census, she would probably show as Jean Adie. John is shown as a Framework Knitter on Jean's death cert.
Jean was married to William Thomson first (bef 1829), but I have no info on when that might have been. William is shown as a Wool Spinner on Jane's death cert.
By the way, the death cert was based on information provided by Jean's son-in-law Thomas Haig. I do not have any info on his placement in the scheme of Jean's life (ie I do not know who is was married to...)
Elizabeth Wilson married Robert Turnbull in 1849. I know they emmigrated to Australia, but have no details of their mode of transport or arrival in Oz. Robert died in St Peters, Sydney in 1891, and I have spotted his tombstone - so I know that the details re his demise are correct! Elizabeth died in 1911, in Enfield, Sydney. Between the two of them (Robert and Elizabeth) they had 9 children - as far as I can tell they were all born in Oz.
Elizabeth and Robert are my GGGrandparents. That makes Jean Knox and Francis Wilson my GGGGrandparents.
Does any of this help refine what you've spotted already?
Thanks for the lookup!
Megan

Hi Megan,
I found them! I had a flash of inspiration this morning - they are listed with surname 'Eddie' rather than 'Adie'. The entry is as follows:
Walters Wynd, Hawick John Eddie - Head - Married - 58 - Woolen framework knitter - Lanark, Glasgow Jean Eddie - Wife - [blank] - 59 - [blank] - Roxburgh, Hawick William Thomson - Step son - Unmarried - 24 - Woolen framework knitter - Roxburgh, Hawick Isabella Wilson - Step Daughter - Unmarried - 18 - Woolen factory worker - Roxburgh, Hawick Jennet Wilson - Step Daughter - Unmarried - 15 - Woolen factory worker - Roxburgh, Hawick John Eddie - Grandson - Unmarried - 8 - Scholar - Roxburgh, Hawick John Thomson - Step Grandson - Unmarried - 16 - Woolen factory worker - Roxburgh, Hawick William Thomson - Step Grandson - Unmarried - 18 - Woolen factory worker - Roxburgh, Hawick Jane Thomson - Step Granddaughter - Unmarried - 14 - Woolen factory worker - Roxburgh, Hawick
There are also details of 1 servant and 19 lodgers - I can give you the details of them if you like. It must have been a large house!
So, from the above, it looks as if Jean has a child William with her first husband. Is this the same William as you though was the son of Francis Wilson, or is it second one? In fact possibly more than one son with William Thomson, given the 3 grandchildren with the surname Thomson. It also looks as if she 2 more children with husband Francis - Isabella and Jennet.
I still can't find Jane or Elizabeth on it. It is possible that Elizabeth and Robert had emigrated by that point, or had left Hawick at the very least.
Have you tried looking at the 1871 census for the family. You can see it at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It is a pay per view site and will cost you 6 GBP for 30 credits. 1 credit to biew a page of search results, and 5 to look at the image of the entry, which you can then print off. You shouold managed to narrow things down quickly as Adie/Eddie is not common in the 1851 census in Hawick, so I doubt there will be many more in the 1871 census.
I will keep digging away here - let me know how you get on.
Cheers, Clare

That is great, Clare - thank you.
BTW - I have just managed to get my Genealogy Website working - you may want to have a look at my data at
http://www.tilleyenterprises.com/phpgedview/
Please note that I can not get the login to work properly, but I have checked and one can view the data.
You might be able to see the linkages a bit better than me retyping all the data.

Hi Jeanette,
I am not actually researching Turnbulls, but Elliots in the Hawick and Castleton areas. No links to Turnbulls yet - but given the way that names keep linking together, I am guessing it will only be a matter of time (so far plenty of Scotts, Croziers and Humes).
Which Elliot line are you researching?
Cheers, Clare

Looks promising...
I have Robert Turnbull (1820-1891) marrying Elizabeth Wilson (1830-1911) in 1849.
Robert's father was William Turnbull (1799-1876) who migrated to Australia, we believe after, not with, son Robert, but we have not emmigration date for him.
William Turnbull's father was Robert (b c 1770).
That's all I have for the (my) Turnbulls in Scotland, so I can not confirm any successes with Jeanette's links.
