While researching for another topic I cme across this site which will interest all you Photo' restorers. It has some of the most interesting photo's you could imagine, together with some nice tidbits of info'. The prices on some of these photo's goes into the hundreds of dollars each, Wasn't it Pru that had the huge collection of old photo's - looks like you should get it insured. Do yourselves a favour - have a look and put it on your revisit list. Denn

Hi Den
Thanks for the link. I have had a quick look and will look more after work tonight. The photos are interesting but so are the childhood and the objects sections. I will have to turn out the loft and the garage and retire on the proceeds!
Back to the photos it give clear illustrations of the different types and I've not really understood the tin types before
Cheers
Jane

Hi Denn, I have indeed got a bit of a collection of old photos, none that I've paid that much for, though! The ones on this site are in good condition and seem well researched, it would make a good reference site for people wanting to date photos I think (although obviously as the photos get sold I assume they leave the site) Thanks for the link! Hi Denn
I've also got hundreds of photos. Probably 30-40 pre 1900, lots round 1900-1920 and the majority after 1920, not that I have got round to counting them. Some of the early ones are in good condition as they have been kept in drawers etc for years, (though Prue I am going to look after them now I have had your advice).
I cannot understand why people would want to pay that sort of money for the cabinet type photos of people they don't know. The very early ones 1860-1870 I can understand as they are far more rare. The prices are interesting though I would never sell mine as they are sentimental. It is nice to share them on this forum though. I will have to look in junk shops as I am sure they have boxes of very old photos from house clearances.
Still a very good link.
Jane

I find it sad, on occasions when walking around Boot Fairs and such. You can find entire Photo Albums, of unknown people long gone. Sometimes the last visable proof they ever exisited Many end up in a skip at the end of the day.

Much on line with this comment http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,78937.msg328515.html#msg328515 But then of coarse we cant hang onto everything ad infinitum - sad as it is we must let go - I often thik though that while our memories are still here, so are we: when no one remembers, that is when we are finally gone from this life. That is a bit deep. May be it is something I don't want to face. Lets be positive, I've got children (big ones 23 & 21) hopefully eventually they will have children, ooh grandchildren I can play with, then they will have children etc. Is this what we are working to, to give them a snapshot of their heritage? Yes we are going back as far as we can but it is still from the perspective of 21st century life. Lets hope they take it on board rather than discard it. Don't forget all our work could end up on the tip with a house clearance! I hope not.

I took DENN's meaning to be this:
That is why we do this fabulous, frustrating hobby, to preserve the memories of those who have gone before us for our future generations.
If we don't do this, then when no one remembers us, or from whence and whom we came - we truly are gone.

Hi I wasn't being morbid, just a thought that we may have a full and happy life (at least I do) and folly as it may be to think we last for ever some day long after we have gone we will be forgotton forever on this plane of existonce -----------Now the important thing is that the more knowledge our offspring have the better for them to tackle and understand life in general and don't you have a warmth about you when you think about how our ancestors lived, even though they may have had a less sophisticated than our complex life, they must have had the same thoughts, feelings and if not the same then equivalent problems that we do now. A similar train of thought is that a couple of weeks ago I was laid in hospital in a considerable amount of pain, that pain is now gone so does it really matter - for all intents it may never have been, it is gone gone.
Goodness! this does get deep, doesn't it? Denn

Hi Denn
So glad you are better. To lighten the subject I am so glad I got into this photo restorers group. It has given me many hours of enjoyment. One strange feeling I have got is that when one of my photos has been improved, especially dare I say it in colour, it brings people to life and I really wish I could have met them. For those I did know but are no longer here it brings back happy memories of childhood.
