Would any kind rootschatter please see if they can find William Johnson born c 1871 Hornsey Middlesex (according to the 1901 Census)But 1869 according to a relative, and 1870 according to his marriage certificate. He will be living with a father also called William Johnson, who is probably a labourer, if William jnrs wedding certificate has an ounce of truth in it, because mostly it was lies. At the time of his marriage in 1895 the address was given as 52 Douglas Street. William married Georgina Waters at St Mary ??thill fields, City of Westminster, london. 13th January 1895; they falsified grooms surname, brides fathers name and occupation, but it is ammended by a note on the certificate with the real details. I havn't been able to find William jnr in 1881, he may be on 1871 depending on birth year, he is possible in an army barracks in 1891 because he was with the Royal Horse Artillery. The falsified marriage certificate being due to an elopment, as he didn't have permission from his commanding officer to wed (we think). To top it all William Johnson is a very common name. Casalguidi has given me a lot of help in the past and got me on the right track with his wife Georgina Waters, but William son of William is proving a harder nut to crack.

Hi Siouxie
Are you sure of the spelling of Johnson- cos the marriage is indexed with him spelt JOHNSTON?
As you say William Johnson-son of William Johnson is a very common name. Did you know you can search the 1881 on the LDS site by putting in a name and link it to the head of the household.
Do you have any other clues to help us here I presume there were no family members who witnessed the wedding? Do you even know the names of any other siblings of William,or perhaps what did he name his kids- usually one or more were named for grandparents or aunts and uncles.
I'll see what I can find in 1891 next. Do you have his service record from the Royal Horse Artillery - that would probably give you next of kin- usually an address too.
Regards
Carol

Hello again
Well I have found a 21 year old William Johnson in 1891,who is a sapper in the Royal Engineers at Woolwich(who may or may not be the right one )
Born in St Margarets, London, Middlesex (NB there's a George Bush near him on the list !!!)
Ref RG12/531Folio: 77 page 40 Address- Woolwich Dockyard, Royal Artillery Barracks
Maybe one of his chums would have turned out as best man at his wedding,if you find any names let me know and I'll check the list for you. There are 25 young men in all.
All the best
Carol

Thanks Carol, Here goes second attempt at replying to you, bleedin' developers across the road keep causing power outs grr!
Yes I am sure it is Johnson. Johnston was a big fat lie. Thanks to the fact on my grandmothr's birth cert her mum was noted as formerly "Walters"; I was looking for a marriage between a William Johnson and Georgina Walters. Casalguidi found me the GRO for the Johnston/Waters marriage and when the cert arrived it confirmed that she was Waters and he was telling porkies. The actual details being noted to the side of the certificate.
Witnesses on the certificate are William Johns(t)on, I am presuming dad and Francis Eleanor Smith.
In 1901 the family are living in Fulham RG13 54 149 49 318 69 Prothero Road. He is Living on Own means - which I took to mean army pension ?! They have one son Alfred born 1896 at the time. There is also a visitor on Census night called Jane Duncan age 63 born Aberdeen Scotland. I don't know what her connection is with this family. The are definitely Johnson and having made contact with a person researching the Waters side; she (Georgina) was mentioned in her grandfathers will as Georgina Johnson.
Their children were: Alfred 1896 Dorothy Edith in 1903 Charles Richard 1904 William George 1906 Lilian Rose (my Grandma) in 1911
They may very well be Johnson family names because Georgina was one of 5 girls and didn't use their names for her daughters. Her father was Robert and her Grandfather Walter. Non of her Uncles and Aunts names were used for her children either. I am afraid I know nothing about William's family apart from his father's name.
I am loving the army census you found in 1891, this is looking good to be him. it gives me something to go on anyway. I have a picture of William as a young man, very possibly early 20's in full military get up - I had always been told Royal Horse Artillery, but although I posted to this site the picture, I had no-one confirm it for me.
What I need to find is William at home with William so I can get the mother's name, or pin down the birthplace and year for a birth cert. I'm going to look into St Margarets as a birthplace.
You've been a real help
Suzanne
