1792 survey - Duke of Argyle's Estate.
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 15:42 UTC (UK) »

i noted with interest in a post that John McSporran, see url below,  had managed to access the 1792 survey of hte Duke of Argyle's estate.

can anyone tell me if this is available on-line, or, how does one go about accessing it .. even hte slow-slog way?

i'm researching McShannons / McShenoigs etc and would love to have a deco at it and see if any of ours are there.

http://website.lineone.net/~john.mcsporran/kilkerran.html

thanks for your time

Hi Fionnghal,

I see this posting was made a year ago, so I hope you haven't given up ...

Just to say that I visited Campbeltown recently and had a chance to look at the survey of the Duke of Argyle's estate in the library there.  They were very kind and helpful people: maybe if you were to give them a call they would be happy to look up the relevant info for you?

Cheers,

Ros

i'm afraid they didn't list one.   you could try googling for it, otherwise all i can suggest is you write to them airmail stating what exactly you're interested in finding out and asking for a quote for the search and include your e-mail address for the answer.

if it is a straightforward search, it may not be too expensive.  our library charges about £1 for each newspaper lookup as long as dates are supplied.  but a council archivist, who usually work from the library reference/archive section, who did a few searches for me, required £20 in advance for the 1st hour's search then £10 for up to each additional 30 minutes.

you'd have to find out that first.

good luck

There was somebody offering to do look-ups earlier on this year on the Argyll board at RootsWeb: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SCT-ARGYLL/2006-01/1136210622

Not sure if they are still doing it, but maybe worth a try!
