Thanks Bob,
Looks like I'd better get a few more veggie's in then.  Grin

Is it best to get a rough idea of layout's etc, position of photo's
and other info to be included or is there plenty of suggestions, for those who've never done this.
Also, do/can we include outside links to other sites of interest?

Hi Lesanne,

This is part of the fun:
Have a look at Section 3.

3. Decide what you want your website to do and how you want to present it.

- Go through the links at have a think about what you would like to show on your site

- Look at other people's sites for ideas.

- If it helps you to visualise it better, then try drawing sketches of how you want the end result to look like

Bob

ps. Yes, you can include links to other sites inyour own. I have often included links to sites which give more details about people and places I mention on my site.

Annie,

no problem really, we'll take it step for step.

maybe you could follow the suggestion above, make sketchs of how you want the web-site to look, and then we can think about how to make it happen.

OK Bob!

Here's the thing - I HAVE to have a program that's extremely easy !!  Roll Eyes
I checked everbody'e web sites and thought -  I can do that - but the more I thought about it -  I knew I couldn't!!
so I had to think about what I COULD do!
I thought about it for a long time ... and suddenly thought that I could fill in the registration at Rootschat and I can write messages you just click a button write your message and send .... easy - I can adapt that for my  Honour Roll - click a button write the information etc. there's even a place for photos!!
well it was a good idea while it lasted - A message board giving free space to what it thought was another message board!! Tongue
then Trystan forgot about me  ....... the new server and everything - he put me into his "to do" box and didn't........!!
So I had to come up with something else - I'm lucky because my son knows what he's doing on computers but he will only tell me what to do -
he won't do it 'cos this is my baby - but if I don't write everything down on a cheat sheet - I'm done for  Tongue
I have a program now that's not too bad to handle but if I run into problems it's phone calls or I have to wait for him to come over - So I've been working on that and it's a long job !
but I want to get started on my own web page and I'm now terribly confused! - because I can't do it the easy way!

So after my litany of the Saints - what I'm trying to say is -
I know what I would like - I know I don't have the knowledge to do what I would like - and the only reason I answered this post was because you said you would do it STEP BY STEP
for me it really HAS to be fundimental ...... !!

Did you roll your eyes then Bob??

Hi Bob!!

Right now for my Honour Roll I'm using Macromedia Contribute 3 - this is for 30 days trial right now -  then I'll pay for it ...... Roll Eyes I've been able to manage that after much time and patience and of course the cheat sheets!!  Tongue

But my son bought me  - The Next Generation of Genealogy SitebuildingŠ for my web site - and I really haven't got into yet  - as I'm still gathering my stuff to put on it - though I have to say my son said - "Jeez Mum! - people are going to be here all day!! Roll Eyes"

Looking at all the other sites on Roots - I see three I really like - but they are all entirely different - hence my confusion - I have too many options -  Tongue Tongue

Hi Annie,

It looks like part of your worry is that you are using two different web programs and you only have one web-site.

         No Problem !!

You should be able to use "Next Generation...." to build your main site and then put a link in that to the Honour Roll ( the Macromedia Contribute output).

If that doesn't work, you just make your own home page with a link to each of the other programs.

I'll go into details later, (off to work now) but you can see some examples under "Commercial Products" on my site. I have 5 different packages there, simply uploaded, "as is" !

Hi Annie,

yes I think it was fairly easy (as far as I can remember !)

Look at this topic too, Reply #2
Topic: Help and advice - family trees on websites
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,76240.15.html

I think I downloaded kstableu, pointed it at my GEDCOM and told it where to store the results in a particular directory (folder), and then uploaded that directory to my website.

I have a very basic GEDCOM, as most of my family info. is already on my site, so all the "coomercial" examples on the site are very minimal.  I believe if you have more detail in the GEDCOM then you can "tweak" all of these programs to get better looking results than mine
(I've really only left them there as examples for this board)
