Feedback: Step-by-step Guide to building your website
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 14:39 BST (UK) »

I've just signed up for my free webspace - or I think I have - and like many of those who've posted on here I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what to do next.  I can't find the index.htm file anywhere on my system.  Where should I look?

Is there some kind Rootschatter out there who can post a step-by-step – and I mean step-by-step guide on what to do?  It seems clear from the postings on the board that a good many people are entirely lost and the only way some of them have made progress is by trawling through each and every posting, then coming back with questions.  Could someone do a simple list of what to do?  Something which starts '1. Click this ..2. Type that … 3. You must have …'.  Something very, very basic and which describes each and every step?

To find the answers by examining all the posts is really frustrating and makes it difficult to try and collate all the different recommendations.  Some postings suggest one thing, others another.

Please help!

Hi Lindyboo,

That sounds like heaven, but unfortunately there is no one and only  way of doing it !!

Jocie and I put together a lot of links in the
TUTORIAL: Help with building your website.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.0.html
which will at least point you in the right direction, but at some time you will have to post here saying exactly which web site program you are using, which FTP program, etc, so we can give you more tips.

Sorry !!

Bob

ps. this is a subject dear to my heart, so if I do think of any possibilities, I shall most certainly publish them here, but keep working on your website in the meantime, as it may take a while  !!

Erm - well, you've stumped me there for a start.  That's the point really - I don't know what you mean by 'web site program' or which ftp I'm using - I honestly don't!

If you can enlighten me I'll try and answer!

Well, what if I ask one question at a time?
« Reply #3 on: Thursday 22 September 05 15:56 BST (UK) »

Okay, let me try and be more specific.

I entered my details on the registration page for my free web space.  I got an e-mail with an ID and authorization code.  I entered those details in the little orange coloured box which had appeared on page 3 of the registration site.

Page 4 now says 'Your account: mcdanielson.rootschat.net is already confirmed, the login information was sent to your email box.'

Can someone tell me what I do now?  Please?  Before I throw myself out of the window?

Hi Lindyboo,

You've opened up a can of worms here !!

When Jocie and I put the tutorial together, I always had the thought at the back of my mind, to expand it some day, and put more text in, rather than links.

But "some day" never comes,as there is always so much stuff to do .....

.... unless.......

we simply make time to do it, and say "some day" is NOW !!!

So this is the plan:

I will start adding more explanations to the tutorials,
and you have just volunteered to be a guinea pig (bet you didn't know that  Grin)

And if anybody else wants to be a volunteer guinea pig, then step right up !!!

I'll start at the first steps, and you can let me know, on this thread, if it's understandable.  This may sound a bit clumsy, talking on one thread about the contents of another thread, but if the feedback goes on the tutorial thread, then that gets messy, and we have to keep scrolling through, trying to find the relevant information.  So let's try it out and see.

Willing to have a go Huh

Bob

Lindy,

you should have an e-mail from myroots[AT]web.rootschat.net in your mailbox.

Have a look at this and tell me if that's what you have.
