Is there a census of 1841?
« on: Friday 23 September 05 09:29 BST (UK) »

I was just wondering .................

I see so many "Look up" request for "census 1841". And none of them get answered.

I'm looking for a person born in Middleton, Co. Durham. I would love to know were she was before she got married (1848). Find names of parents and siblings.

Any idea where to start?

The main problem with the 1841 census is that much of it is not indexed and it is very hard to read on the film so it takes a very long time to search.   The information is limited too.  It only says whether born in the county or not and ages over 15 are rounded down to the nearest 5.     You can order the film yourself from your nearest LDScentre - listed on www.familysearch.org and worldwide.  Otherwise try Durhamrecordsonline as they have indexed some of it.   There should be a link at the top of the Durham Board.
Hope you find them.

Hi Miranda

In addition to Andrea's post above, the 1841 census stands out because so many of the others are online - on subscription sites such as Ancestry and 1837onlin, hence many people can access them and answers are usually forthcoming pretty quickly - in fact it can get quite competitive!  Grin

By contrast, 1841 is less widely available - mostly on disc, although I believe some area are now available online and Ancestry are promising to have 1841 and 1851 countrywide "soon".

Best thing for you is to post again, with EVERYTHING you know about your lady - you just might strike lucky!

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Miranda

I ( and several others) have the census cds and do 1841 census lookups for Durham & Northumberland, and we have answered quite a few lookup requests!!  Sometimes it takes quite a long time to go through the cds unless an idea of address is given, and we do them in our spare time.  If you let me know the name of the person perhaps I can help

Hi Barbara,

I wasn't sure if there was a census of 1841 as I've heard that for many counties it's still impossible. I thought it might be for Co. Durham too.
The person I'm looking for:

Sarah Watson - born c.1823 in Middleton, Durham

In 1841, she would have been 18 years old.
She got married in 1848 and lived since then in Westmorland.

Sorry, I've no address!

Thanks!

Regards,

Hi, Stepping Stones at

http://www.stepping-stones.co.uk/

has 1841 records for Durham and some other counties online. They are not indexed!!! so it is like having a CD, you have to trawl through what they have, and it takes a long time to download each page, even with a broadband connection. But because of this, they are extremely cheap - when I signed up, you got 25 credits for £5 and each credit gives you a whole census piece which you have 3 weeks to look through.

But they are there, which is something! And it is much cheaper than a CD -  especially important if you aren't sure your ancestor is there.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi Miranda,
Middleton-in-Teesdale is a large parish which also includes Egglestone,
Forest & Frith (Ettersgill, Middle-Forest, Harwood), and Newbiggin. I looked right through Middleton-in-Teesdale town itself and found lots of Watsons, but no Sarah, although in parts the census is so faded it's impossible to read, so she could still be there somewhere.
Do you have details of her marriage, which should show her father's name, and her address in 1848 , (maybe she had already moved to Westmorland). Also do you have her details in later censuses in Westmorland, which might show a more detailed place of birth (or do they all just say Middleton, Durham?)

familysearch.org site has:
Sarah Watson baptised 1 Dec 1822 M-in-T parents Mark Watson & Eleanor
Sarah Watson baptised 5 May 1823  M-in-T parents John Watson & Sarah
Sarah Watson baptised 3 Aug 1824  M-in-T  parents John Watson & Ann

Durhamrecordsonline site shows 5 Sarah Watsons, one of these is aged 18, born in the county, a female servant in Darlington 1841 census but it's a common name so may not be her. I've noted the details in case you want them.
I also looked through the village of Middlestone near Auckland in case that was her birthplace, but no Watsons there at all.
If I have time tomorrow I'll go through the other towns in the parish of M-in-T

Hope this helps a bit, Barbara  Smiley

Hi Miranda,
Have looked right through the rest of the parish of Middleton-in-Teesdale, lots of Watsons again but no Sarah, sorry.  If you have a later census with more details of her birthplace, please let me know

Barbara,

Thank you so much for your help.  Smiley

I guess now that Sarah must have been staying somewhere else at the time of the census.
Birthplace in the 3 census I have is Middleton/Durham.

I better order the marriage certificate to find out more about her parents and siblings.

Hi,

There's another baptism showing on the Genuki site for Middleton parish:

28 Dec 1823
Sarah Watson, child of Joseph & Jane.
