Metcalf of Elwick any info

Hi
I am looking at John Metcalf who I first find in 1871 census living at Washington, He says he was born in Elwick Durham circa 1835.

By 1881 the census says he was born in Hylton - Bishopwearmouth where his kids were born, i presume census error.

By 1891 I am presuming he has died.

I cant find him 1861 census and am hoping anyone has anything about any Metcalfs of Elwick to give me a clue about who he was, he's my hubbys great great grandfather and so we are keen to learn about him.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be over the moon.

1861 census 15 Hoppers Row, Houghton le Spring  John Metcalfe age 25 born Elwick, lodger, shoemaker (in household of Daniel Marshall)  full details if you want them
also:
1871  census Chester le Street     John Metcalfe age 36  born Elwick   1881       "    Houghton le Spring     "          "       age 44  "     Hylton

Also on Rootschat if you enter Metcalfe into the search box, there's a Metcalfe society

I would love the 1861 census if you can let me have it.

I still cant find it on ancestry even using Daniel Marshall.

I will look at that Metcalfe group.

I was at Sunderland library Friday and found a book on elwick which shows John Metcalf baptised 1835 parents Joseph and Catherine so im hoping Im getting there. All I need is to track down Johns marriage so i can get his dads name, cant have been many 1835 Elwick births surely except his dad and brother were masons/bricklayers, guess John wanted a new trade.

This is what I got from Durham records online but they don't give ref. no.
  Houghton-le-Spring 1861 Census, 15 Hopper's Row
  Daniel Marshall, Head, married, 45, Coal Miner, born Percy Main, Northumberland
  Ann Marshall, Wife, married, 51, born Hebron (Hebburn) Durham
  Michael W. Marshall, son, 14, Apprentice Grocer, born Percy Main, Northumberland
  Elizabeth R. Marshall, daughter, 7, Scholar, born Seaton, Northumberland
  John Metcalf, lodger, 25, Shoemaker, born Elwick, Durham

I looked on Ancestry.com       - nothing!! as you found.
So I looked on 1837.com as I have plenty of credits (!) and it's there:
RG9/3752 fol.81 p.27   15 Hoppers Row, Houghton Le Spring, Durham
Daniel Marshall  Head M 45  Coal Miner     Percy Main, Northumberland
Ann Marshall    Wife   M 51                        Hebron,  Durham
Michael W  "     son         14  Grocers Apprentice Percy Main, Northumberland
Elizabeth     "     dau         7   Scholar              Seaton, Northumberland
John Metcalf   lodger unm 25 Boot & Shoe Maker Elwick, Durham

Goodness knows how Ancestry have it indexed!    Huh

It will hopefully help me track down a possible place of marriage cos Ive had no luck so far.

I may even find it on ancestry one day.....
