Heather,

Do need other names? James appears in the news papers and his daughter's married name.

Also - James went to England in July of 1914 to see family and bring back his wife and daughter.

There is a picture of a church group with a Wilmot daughter.

This is from Ancestry.com - historical newspapers.

I can email you a jepeg if you want. I can email all the articles - or just give yoy names.

Two brothers of my g grandfather emigrated and settled in Elyria City, Lorain County Ohio. I have them in censuses 1910 -1930. On the 1920 census it tells me that both were naturalized in 1918.

Do you know where I could find these records?

Heather

Be a bit cautious using the census for the naturalization or immigration year - you have to search a year or two on either side.

So you want to check 1917-1919.  In fact I see that your WIlliam's obit of 1936 says he lived in the area for 27 years, making his immigration 1919. (again, this might not be completely accurate, obits are just someone else's memories)

You can start at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ohio.shtml (Ohio Nat. Records). To quote from the site "For naturalization records after September 1906, contact the National Archives Great Lakes Region or the nearest office of Immigration and Naturalization Service. " There are links given in this section so you need to go to the website to get to them.

INS can also check their Index to Naturalizations 1906-1956.  I'd write and ask them to that on your behalf.

There are some online records at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/oh_onlinedb.shtml

You'll see all the links arranged by county within the state of Ohio.

Have you found their immigration record?

Many thanks Eillo. Currently waiting on the Ohio contact Meldrew gave me, as they have been in touch and think that they can help. I'll probably get there in the end one way or another!

Though my maths says that 27 years back from 1936 gives an emigration year of 1909 for William as it stated on the census  Wink  James claims to have arrived in 1901 and this is probably correct as they were absent from the British census in the spring of 1901.

Regards, Heather

Oops :-) I guess I needed another cup of coffee before doing that subtraction!

In case it's of interest, here's William and Eliza's burial records (incorrectly given as WilmoNt) from Ridgelawn Cemetery , Lorain Co. ohio [http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/lorain/cemeteries/ridgelawn/part35.txt]

WILMONT                   Eliza                      W-R10a-10          1862           1930                    mother
WILMONT                   William                    W-R10a-9           1865           1936                    father
There are quite a few hits for the surname in the Chronicle Telegram of Elyria Ohio -I'm on dial up so it's too slow for me to go through and load them all, but a couple at random might be interesting for you -- I've precised them:

May 26, 1931. Mr & Mrs. James Wilmot of Oxford Ave leaving Fri to spend a month with dau. Mrs. jack Higgins of Waukegan Ilinois
Sept 3, 1938 Mr & Mrs. J S Higgins and dau Ruth of Kenosha Wisconsin. Parents Mr & Mrs. james Wilmot of 359 Oxford Ave and Mr & Mrs. P M Higgins

I'll keep hunting :-)

I'm having a bit of fun so took a look in the 1930 census for James Wilmot's daughter (mrs Jack Higgins)

Here they are in Waukegan, Lake, Illinois

Jack Higgins born abt 1898  Ohio
Ethel Higgins born abt 1896    England
Ruth Higgins born  abt 1922  Illinois (dau)

btw Jack is an agent in the Yeast Industry, have no idea what that really entails :-)

There is a Jack Higgins born 20 Apr 1897 in the SSDI (Social Security Death Index) died Dec 1962, SSN was issued in Wisconsin, so he's a good 'fit' for your family

This same Jack Higgins (middle initial "S") same birth date, is in Ohio Military Men for WW1 He was born Cleveland Ohio and enlisted 3 Sep 1918. There's quite a bit of info on him, he was in hospital, in quarantine, made a cook in 1919.... discharged Oct 31, 1919

Hope this helps add a little "meat" to the family!

Heather -- wake up! :-)  This is so exciting - I've found your James Wilmot's immgration record.

He, wife Emma and dau Ethel are listed on board the ship "New England" arriving Boston Mass. 26 Jan. 1901 having left from Liverpool

Here's their info from the manifest
James age 27
Emma age 27
Ethel age 6

James is a Lace Inspector. Most other passengers gave a last residence and destination but James did not. The index says Beeston for last res. but that is the person some lines above him and there are no ditto marks visible.

I found this by starting at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/ and using the search box top of page

Ha ha - I'm awake - just! But wouldn't you just know my internet connection has been playing up and I couldn't get on for a while.

Thank you both SO much. It's great to turn my Willmott family into real people.

Susan, I am sorry you are having trouble getting those large files through. I now have 5 mails safely and will peruse them at leisure tomorrow. You are right by the way about the Willmotts being a church family. My grandmother (James and William's niece) often talked about their church connections and attending three times every Sunday. ... Church of England, Methodist and Salvation Army!

I'm thrilled at all this info, but I think it's time I got some sleep Smiley

There will be a delay in any replies from Ohio Redhead - she is a bit upset as she has had to have her  lovely dog put to sleep, the poor dog has cancer.
