1851/61 lookup please for Stumbles
« on: Friday 23 September 05 17:48 BST (UK) »

Dear All,
I am looking for a Mary Stumbles on the Plymouth 1851 or 1861 census. She had previously been Mary Andrews, but we haven't been able to find her record of marriage to Mr.  ? Stumbles!! We have looked in all the on line resources for this. We know that she lived in the Plymouth Charles area if this helps. She would be around 50 years old in 1851, but as the ages are rounded down on the 1841 she could be up to 55 or 6 etc. Sorry I am unable to be more specific, but hopefully the rarity of the name will help!??! Undecided

Hi Keith,
Thanks for your hard work. Is this the 1851 or 1861 census? If it is the 1851, have you the 1861 for the same family as I'd love to know William Stumbles job as all the children are born in different places. Mary Stumbles is the second wife of our great great grandfather Richard Andrews who died and then she re-married. I find it odd that she would abandon the children she had in Plymouth with him  - the youngest only being in his early teens.
Thanks

Hi Keith,
I have just done some research into the names you have given me. It seems that 2 of the children died in Nottingham before 1880 and William snr. died in Lancashire in 1867 .I looked up his marriage on the basis of this and found he married a Mary Wellington, so this isn't our family. Thanks anyway and if anyone can find a Mary Stumbles in Plymouth it would be much appreciated.

Do you have the full details of any of the children you expect to be with her?

Was she born in Plymouth or elsewhere. Birthplace is more important than where you think she will be.

When did Richard die?

Thanks, Tricia

Dear Tricia

Thanks a lot.  We have only just discovered that Richard Andrews was married twice and Mary his second wife eventually married again to a man named Strumbles.  She was in Plymouth in 1860 as she changed the records of her son's birth by a certified deed.     In 1851 her youngest son Thomas may have still been at home as he was only 13.   Richard Andrews died in either 1844 or 1847 we are not sure which date.  He would have died in Plymouth.   Any information would be much appreciated.

I think you may have to cross your fingers and hope someone with the 1851 census can help.

Thanks as always Kris,
We have found this Thomas Andrews before, but we have never found Mary Andrews after she was widowed in 1844 or 1847, until we found this deed that she changed in 1860 in Plymouth ,by which time she was named Mary Stumbles. That is all we know and we are stuck!!

Hi,

I don't have the 1851 or 1861 Devon census, but I have a Mary STUMBLES from the 1841 census for East Stonehouse, Devon. This gives her age as 45. She was married to Abraham STUMBLES and had children John (15), Robert (15), James (13), Thomas (9), and Richard (4). Mary's place of birth is given as "Foreign", and I know from other sources that she was born Mary BLACKMORE in St Kitts and Nevis (see http://www.stumbles.org.uk/Stumbles/safricans.html).

Another Mary was married to William Sully STUMBLES. Her maiden name was Mary Ann WALTERS. They lived in Plymouth around 1850-60, and I know of 2 children, Anna Margaret STUMBLES (b. 6 Dec 1851) and Mary Louisa STUMBLES (b. 30 July 1857).

Regards
David

Thank you David.

Its a bit frustrating as our Mary Stumbles would have been born about 1808-10 and lived in Plymouth.    We do not know our Mary's maiden name but her married name the first time round was Andrews. We know she was in Plymouth in 1860 as she certified a deed then.  Stumbles is such a rare name we hope that the later  Censuses may hold the key.  Many thanks for your kind help anyway.

Kind regards
Nooshie

PS  She may be on the 1851/1861 or 1871 Censuses.  If anyone out there can have a look I would be most appreciative!!!
