Hi Isobel,
I hope this isn't a stupid question, but do you have a child of the above parents, it would be so much easier to find the mother then.

knew he possibly emigrated but I think I managed to trace him and received the message below. So I was trying to find marriage. As you can see their children were born abroad.
John Hogg, aged 33, a Steam Engineer from Scotland, wife
Ellen, aged 35, born Scotland, Peter W aged 11 born New York, Thomas B aged 6 born New Jersey, Andrew aged 2 born New Jersey and Ellen Buchan aged 77 born Scotland, possibly his mother-in-law.
I don't know if this will help or not.

I have the marriage you were looking for but they are from Edinburgh area.
John Hogg 20yrs, married Helen Buchan, he was a Fireman and she a dressmaker, aged 23,
his parents were Peter Hogg and Elizabeth Watt.
her parents were John Buchan and Helen Nimmo.
25/9/1857. near Edinburgh.
John hogg married Elizabeth Watt 25/6/1836 South Leith Midlothian.
they had John hogg 23/4/1837 South Leith.
Andrew Hogg 17/3/1839 " "
In regard to John Buchan and Elizabeth Nimmo, I couldn't find a Marriage or children on the IGI,
except for a submission by a person.
