There is neither a William or a James in the 1851 census for Barnsley/Ardsley/Silkstone.The only William Gaunt is aged 17.I don`t think that`s a transcription error for 7 ( which would help your case), because he`s listed as an apprentice cabinet maker . Even taking slave labour into account,7 is a trifle too young!

Thanks for that,
This a branch of ancestors who moved to Yorks.
They did move around a bit.
William is in the '41 census at Cordeux Row, Barnsley with parents and elder siblings.
Birth of William is correct I have p/copy of the BC and '81 census[Featherstone] has bp as Barnsley.
This branch of the family moved from Nottinghamshire[early 1800's] and before that they came from Staffordshire[1500'S]
