Death in Upper Dallachy - where would they be buried?
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 03:48 BST (UK) »

My parents are visiting the UK next month and of course I am preparing a long list of ancestral stamping grounds for them to take pictures of  Grin

Several generations of my McKAY family lived and died at Upper Dallachy, and I wondered where they would have been buried?  From another family member I have a gravestone reference of "Be123" for Alexander McKAY who died 1866 - does this look familiar to anyone?

Assistance appreciated!

This reference from Moray Council's LIBINDX refers to a stone in Bellie Kirkyard, which is a mile or two north of the village of Fochabers, and less than a mile from Upper Dallachy.

Thanks for your interest, Forfarian  Smiley

I'd forgotten about this thread, or I would have posted earlier what I found out from the local council - the Heritage Section of the Elgin Library advise that they have a plan of this kirkyard, and will provide a copy to my dad when he visits next week.  I managed to find the location of the cemetery on a map and you are correct, it is not far from Fochabers at all.

Anyone with ancestors buried in this area will get great assistance from the Elgin Library so get searching!!  Grin

Hello Prue

If you are interested, the  book of Speyside monumental inscriptions available from ANESFHS has inscriptions from both Bellie and Bellie (Tynet), graveyards. (edited by Alison Mitchell)

It gives mainly inscriptions from stones erected pre 1855

Only McKay I can find is the following:

James Munro, weaver, Tynet, 17.5.1853, 79yrs, wife Ann McKay, son William 3.6.1821, 15yrs, daughter Margaret 3.4.1830, 10yrs, son James 1.1862, 52yrs.

There is also available a nice little book "The story of the old church and churchyard of Bellie" complied by Bruce B Bishop, FSA Scot, for The Friends of Bellie Churchyard.

Hope your parents have a good trip this week.

Regards

Ellen.

NB - forgot to say - I have a host of "Packman" relatives from Upper and Nether Dallachy.  If you ever find any of yours marrying a Packman, they're almost certainly also mine!

Oooh, Ellen - no Packmans yet, but you never know!  I live in dread of one of my McKays marrying one of my hubby's Strathdees, they were all up in Bellie/Boharm in the 1800s, way too close for comfort!!

Thank you for the ref to the MIs, there probably are a few of mine in there as they were in that area for several generations, but I can't place the Ann McKay you mentioned (yet).  Thanks also for the ref to the book, if my parents ring I will give them the info and see if they can pick up a copy.  If not, I'll contact the ANESFHS as I guess they would know how I could get it.

Many thanks!
