Hi,
I have just watched the video "A Century in Stone" made in 2004 by Craig Hornby and produced by Pancrack Pictures. It gives the most exraordinarily vivid picture of how the ironstone, (and subsequently steel) industry grew in the area, the lives of the miners and their families and, inevitably, its decline and closure.
Having grown up in Lazenby in the 1950s and 60s, I am now wondering why I didn't know all of this. My own grandfather was, after all, killed in an industrial accident in the steel works. But I didn't know and I suspect an awful lot of others are no wiser than I was. I hadn't a clue, for example, that the California area of Eston was named because, just like its American counterpart in gold, there was, indeed, an "ironstone rush" with people moving from all over Britain to work there. Simple really but, as a kid, I just thought it was a bit of a daft name for some houses on a hillside! Maybe it was all a bit too recent, during my school days, to be classed as teachable history but I am nevertheless stunned by the level of my ignorance. Most of my family background isn't from the area but that's no excuse is it?
So, can I recommend the video to anyone who either grew up in the area, had ancestors there or who simply has an interest in our industrial history and heritage.
My copy came to me from a cousin but there is a web site www.pancrack.tv where I imagine this video and maybe others ( I shall be exploring this myself very soon) should be available.
Jen

Many thanks for that. I grew up in Middlesbrough and moved to Skelton without realising that many of my family had worked in the ironstone industry. Never went to the Tom Leonard Minng Museum in Skiningrove which I now find was somewhere my family lived! Guess where I'm headed on my next holiday ? If only I'd known...

A few old houses on the hillside! My husband's great grandmother Annie Thompson was born in California. We had a visit there two years ago and were absolutely fascinated to be able to walk in her footsteps, even if her actual house was gone. She emigrated to New Zealand as a young woman and we are still trying to fill a few gaps in our knowledge of her. This has sparked my interest once again and I shall try and get the video. Thanks, Seeker3

My mother's family lived in California, the other day after another root around Eston cemetery we went and looked and photographed the house they lived, unfortunately I had forgot the digi camera so pics are on mums camera, remember the ones you have to have developed lol, so when I get them I will try and post for you.
The video is a good watch and you can buy from many shops in Eston, especially the dentist Mr Hussain's practice

"A Century in Stone" certainly is a great DVD/video. My great great grandfather and family were part of the ironstone gold rush; lived in Brotton.
I will be heading up to the area and the Museum in the spring.

I have just ordered the DVD as a lot of my ancestors lived in and around Middlesbrough and worked in the iron works.
You can watch clips of A Century in Stone at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIqJjlHmGRc as well as other Craig Horn videos.

I will be heading up to the area and the Museum in the spring.
They do have a lot of local history publications too in the Clevland Ironstone Series. I have one entitled 'A History of Ironstone Mining at Loftus Mines in Skinningrove valley' particularly because it documents the death of my ggreat uncle, William Lumsden Brown, a deputy who was killed by a roof fall.
Anyway there are a huge number of titles in this series covering the Cleveland area. I enjoyed my visit to the museum and would recommend it to anyone
