Alternatives to Ancestry.co.uk??

I have been using Ancestry.co.uk to search for my relatives with some success, however my credits have now run out.

As I wasn't able to find all the info. I needed on that site I wondered if anybody can suggest an alternative (or is the census info the same on all sites??)

I would be very grateful for your advice.

The original images are the same wherever they are of course but there may be some differences in the indexing ...................

1861 http://www.1837online.com (pay per view)
1881 http://www.ancestry.co.uk http://www.familysearch.org (both free indexes)
1901 http://www.ancestry.co.uk (free index for a limited period)
1901 http://www.census.pro.gov.uk (pay per view) with free index search

There are other bits and pieces around depending upon which county and year is of interest.

Is it anything that another Rootschatter may be able to help you find?

Thanks for your quick response.

I have one request on the Surrey look up board at the moment, if anybody manages to find anything on that I hopefully should be able to decide which way to go next.

The problem I have at the moment is that I can't find the people I need on any census - but have managed from various other seaches to obtain some marriage and birth certs, so i was wondering if a change to where I looking would help.

Andrea, have you found your family in the 1901 census? If so, then do post the details and we can work back from there. If not, then who would you expect to find in 1901 and what information do you know for certain about them?

I haven't found anybody in the 1901 census, (nor any other) the info I have is a bit sketchy and I think my inexperience doesn't help!

I have found that my great grandfather was called Alfred Sydney White b.1887/8 (taken from Ellis Island Passenger list when he emigrated to USA) his birthplace was stated as London but no town etc given.

I have traced a copy of his marriage cert. to Sarah Bowyer on 25/3/1910 - his father's name is listed as John (deceased).

I know Alfred has a brother called William b.1882 as it was him he went to join in USA. (his passenger list states he was also born in London)

The only other clue i have is an original marriage cert. dated 1862 in Southwark, Surrey for a James Daniel White and Ann Jupp, again can't find these on a census but thought the area might be a place to check out.

I have searched all ways I can think of on each of the above people but as I don't really know where they were living at any given time I have been unsuccessful. I can't believe that none of them are on any of the censuses, maybe I just need to widen the search...

I think maybe this couple would be too young to be mine.

My James & Ann were married in 1862, listed as "full age" on the cert.,(should they be around 21 if listed as full age?) that would make them around 30 in 1871. Unless, of course, I'm missing something obvious.....

There seems to be an ann jupps 18y in Deptford 1861 Piece 396 fol 158.

Should her father be called George?

Marriage was 29/3/10 at Chester Registry Office,

He was 23, Bachelor, Platelayer, living at 4 Rock Cottages, Little Sutton, South Wirral. Father John (deceased) was a Gas Manager.

Sarah was 28, Spinster, living at 1 Rock Cottages, Little Sutton, South Wirral. Her father was James Bowyer, labourer.

Witnesses were Sidney Walsh and K or F L Gresty.
