The parish registers for Darenth are online and Walter's baptism 1871 gives father as James Daniel WHITE - hopefully you will find some further mentions of the family in the baptism/marriage/burial registers:
I think probably the next step would be to actually confirm or disprove that this is your James Daniel WHITE and Annie JUPP by sending for the birth certificate for one of their children - Darenth is in the Dartford registration district and it would now come under the jurisdiction of the Gravesend Registry office. If you send direct to a local registry office, they will probably check the names of parents and place of birth for free (and a year or two either side of your given date) before issuing a certificate hence saving you the £7 if it is the wrong one.
Still not having much success linking Alfred with this earlier family so perhaps you can start following this family forward if you can prove that they are the ones
Thank you so much for all your help. I am so excited to have something new to follow up, am going to get started straight away - (current family will have to take a back seat while I look for old family!!)
Thanks again. Andrea
