Charles Bowman born 1783 (originally from Tannadice) married Barbara Millar born 1792 on 31 August 1816 at Kirkwall. She was of the parish but he was of Stromness parish. They had a son (also Charles Bowman) born c1817 & a daughter Barbara but were listed in the Forfar census from 1841. Can anyone provide any census details before this?

Pre-1841 censuses (where they survive) rarely provide more than a list of households with NO names.

Historically the information sought varied: the number of persons of each sex was consistently obtained, but ages were neglected until 1821 and included in every census since 1841. Marital status was included for the first time in 1851.
It is worth contacting the Orkney FHS on this one. There are a few parishes in Orkney where the 1821 census survives, and I think it is down to name (and age?) level.
I saw some of these censuses a few years back when I visited the main library in Kirkwall. From what I can make from the census publications for sale on their website, the parishes with surviving 1821 censuses are: Deerness, Orphir, St Andrews, Sandwick, South Ronaldsay & Burray, and Stromness.
