The Drummer, Newbury
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 22:18 BST (UK) »

Any infomation on "The Drummer" in Newbury in the 1870's 1880's or whereabouts of picture would be greatly appreciated. Ancestors Thomas Vinnell Hines and wife Lucy were the licencees.

Thanks Waterfall

The picture shows the building that used to be the Drummers (left hand end of the block). It is in Northcroft Lane on the corner of Pembroke Road. on the other corner were Robinson's almshouses (now a small car parking area).

However, the records I have seen show the licencee to be named Hinds not Hines.

West Berks Museum may have a photograph of the building as a pub - but they have a huge cataloguing task before their archive is really made accessible.

Brilliant.........thank you so much, had more or less given up hope that there was someone out there who might know. Is worth a trip as still standing.
You are right about it being Hinds....not Hines. Gets spelt in various ways so I tend to spell it one way only.
Is wonderful to have a picture.....thanks again and will be hoping to visit West Berks Museum  or getting in touch.

West Berks Museum has a photo of the Drummers as a pub - taken in 1883. There is a girl standing outside the door looking at the floodwaters a couple of feet from the doorstep.
