Gas fitter in 1881
« on: Monday 25 September 06 01:55 BST (UK) »

I have been searching through the census for the "odds and ends" as you do and I found one rellie who was a Plumber and gas fitter in 1881.

"So what?" You may say but the strange thing was this was a WOMAN!

Does that sound right?

I found her 1871 with her husband who was a Plumber and he had died by 1881. Two of her sons were Plumbers as well (one then and the other by 1901)

I know women ended up working when their husbands died but never heard of one of them taking on the work he did

I have a gr-gr-gr-aunt who was an ironmonger. Her husband was only 45 when he died, and left specific instructions in his will that she was to carry on the business until their eldest son had been sent off to do his apprenticeship, then he was to take over.

On the 1851 census, she is there as an "ironmonger employing 14 men", so I guess she didn't have to get her own hands dirty!

Hello Carol, I have a lady as early as 1851 described as a blacksmith, her husband had been a blacksmith and by 1851 he had died but she still had two sons described as same.

It is possible that your lady was'nt actually doing the work herself but was looking after the family business.

I think she may have been joining in Suey as she is the only Gas fitter. The rest are just plumbers.

Might check out the 1891 census and see what she was doing then
