Hi there
Joseph Henry was my GG Grandfather. He was born at Yew Tree Farm, Tinsley. He married Sarah Coldwell from Barnsley at St Lawrence Church 4.2.1847 and he was a grocer on Howard Street, Sheffield. Sarah Coldwell's father was Benjamin and he is buried in a tomb in the corner of St George's Church yard opposite Jessop's Hospital.
Benjamin Coldwell was my Great Grandfather. He and Sarah Alice lived at Mandeville Street, Darnall. He was a coal merchant and began the family business, the first written records for which are dated 1878. He died 11 March 1899 and is buried in Darnall cemetry. The first child, Sarah Edith married Reg Wharton. He was involved with the family business. Their children were Edith Alice, 1.6.1901 - 7.6.1952, Reginald Stewart, 4.10.04 - 26.5.08, Kathleen,23.3.07 - 25.2.78 who was deaf mute, and Joyce Mary, 30.12.17 - 18.4.90 Harold Higham married Amelia Mason 21.10.30. There were no children to this marriage Austin Coldwell married Ethel Wheat 1.9.09. He was involved with the family business which became SA Goodwin, The Hallamshire Furnishing Co. Their daughter Marjorie married Wilson Hemmingway 11.9.40. Their son Roger b.1940 died by drowning on the Norfolk Broads 1963. Austin died in 1951 and is buried in Abbey Lane Cemetry Hilda Evelyn married Harry Fitter 23.6.09. They had John, 1912 - 1928, unmarried, Robert Fitter, 21.5.20 - 20.2.99, unmarried, and Mary Monica 1929 - 1927. Eric died in the Battle of the Somme 3.9.1916 Mildred & Bob Kersley had no children. Os, my Grandfather married Alice Trotter, 4.11.1898 - 6.12.1970, on 14.9.1927 and had 2 sons, John, 3.11.1931 and Alan, 11.7.1935. Os died 8.12.1956. Os ran the family business with Austin after Sarah Alice's death until his own death when it passed to Alan. Os and Alice are both buried in Abbey Lane cemetry. Sarah Alice died in 1931 and is buried in Abbey Lane cemetry.
Joseph Henry's second son was Joseph Henry, 8.4.1854. He was born in Sheffield and married Mary Fanny Heaton29.4.1909. He was a steel manufacturer. Their 3 children were Hearl H, 3.2.1882 - ? who married a lady by the name of Annie. Sorry, no further info. Stuart Coldwell was born 19.4.1886 at 120 Upperthorpe. He married Florence Nellie Hill and they had 4 children: Robert Henry, 1910 - 1991, unmarried, Maisie, 9.11.1913, Rosemary, 1916 and John Charles, 27.10.1927 - 1991, unmarried. Stuart was knighted in 1953 in the Coronation Honours - Sir Stuart Goodwin of Sheffield Esq.
Joseph Henry's 3rd son was John James Coldwell, 1857 - 1909. He emigrated to Australia around 1889 and married Sarah A Manwaring 1892. They lived in Cootamundra, New South Wales and had 6 children: John b.1893, William F, 1895 - 1959, George Patrick b.1896, Mary Eileen b.1899, Sarah A 1901 - 1932 and Francis L, 1904 - 1904.
Joseph Henry's first daughter was Henrietta b.1858. She married Thomas Carrington and is buried in Abbey Lane cemetry
The last child, Sarah, I have no further info on, sorry.
Just incidentally, the business which Benjamin Coldwell began in 1878 was only sold last year and was still a going concern Hope all of this helps. Carol

Hi Carol,
Thanks very much for all this info on the Goodwin family, my reason for looking for info is Mildred & Robert Kersley, Robert was my grandfathers younger brother.
Do you have the location of the graves at Abbey Lane,( I used to live across the road from there, and visit my grandfathers/grandmothers & great GF & great GM graves there.
Hope to hear from you soon
Trevor

Hi Trevor
No problem at all - glad to be of assistance.
Unfortunately I do not know where any of the graves are, but apparently if you contact the crematorium they have the plot layout so if you tell them who you are looking for and the date they died they can point you in the right direction. I will also ask my dada - seeing him tomorrow. He attended most of the funerals and arranged most of them. He could very well remember. I am attaching a cople of pictures which Dad took. They may give you some indication.
Nice little story for you: Mildred Alice, or Auntie Millie, assisted with the business at one point. I have it on very good authority that when she was calling at customers' houses to collect payments, she used to shove the money up her knicker leg elastic- bloomers, because "They'll never get it there!!!"
If you are interested, I have a couple of nice photographs of Os, one with Austin, Auntie Millie's brothers.
If there is anything else I can help with, let me know.
Carol
