I am trying to start a friend off with their research and we are a bit confused. This is the info he gave me but it doesnt seem to add up. Brian Scott born 1939 Bedford says his parents were Wiilam Scott and Frances Wager.Williams parents were he says William Scott and Elisabeth Douglas,William was born in Radcliff northumberland and Elisabeth born at Wark. Here is the problem,i found a Mathew Douglas and Elisabeth Scott who i thought would have been his Grt Grt Grandparents. The Elisabeth Douglas his Grt Grandmother i found to have been married to Mathew Douglas. Its a mess and wonderd if anyone could sort it out. Both his grandfather and grt grandfather were as far as he knows born in Radcliff. Please can anyone help.Anne.

Hi Anne, I would forget the 'mess' and start with what you know for certain (a few dates would help!). Both names are fairly common, lots of them in the censuses in Northumberland, so need narrowing down a bit. I would try & find the William Scott/ Elizabeth Douglas marriage cert for more information, and then find them on a census. Did you mean that Elizabeth Douglas had previously been born Elizabeth Scott, married Matthew Douglas then married William Scott? Do you have this marriage cert for Matthew Douglas, does it give Elizabeth's maiden name? A quick look at FreeBMD: marriage Jun 1908 Alnwick 10b 841, William Thomas Scott & Elizabeth Douglas on same page birth Mar 1872 Tynemouth 10b 228 William Thomas Scott birth Jun 1885 Castle W. 10b 292 " " " birth Jun 1871 Bellingham 10b 297 Elizabeth Douglas (Wark is in Bellingham district)

Hi Barbara, thankyou for your help on this puzzle. We have established that Brians father William Thomas Scott was born in Radcliff,Northumberland and married Frances Wager in 1937.His Grandfather also William Thomas Scott was we think also born in Radcliff in 1863 and married Elisabeth Douglas June Qtr 1908 at Alnwick. His Grt Grandfather John Scott born Alnwick 1825 and married Eleanor Herbartson 16th May 1846.From his Grt Grandfather John above it is pure speculation,i think the John Scott born 1825 and married 1846 cant be his grandfather Williams dad because if he married in 1846 and William wasnt born till 1863 thats 17 years after John got married.Brian insists that Frances Wager and William Scott and Elisabeth Douglas and William Scott are right.I have found a census record with a John Scott and wife Eleanor with a son William born in Radcliff. The census was Amble Harbour as place of residence in 1881 making William born 1863 he was listed as 18 years old.I have told Brian today he will have to get his Grandfathers marriage certificate to find his correct parents.Thankyou Barbara for your reply.Anne.

1891 census, there is a William T Scott living at Hauxley, born at Racliff. He is 11 years old, making him born 1880 and his father is James Scott. This seems a more likely age for someone who married in 1908.
You do need the marriage certificate, and probably birth certificates to prove the link though.
