To Lorraine

George SKURR married Mahala Simmons 31 jan 1919, Battle Sussex. His birth was registered as SCURR, but the two spellings are the same name but the "K" is perculiar to Cumberland.
He was born 4 Oct 1888, son of George SCURR & Mary Dixon. In 1891 the family were in St. Bees. George SCURR (Snr) was born in 1842, Dacre Cumberland & Mary Dixon c. 1852 Bolton Parish, Westmorland.
George (born 1842) was the son of John SKURR & Mary Cowman.

John & Mary had another son John SKURR born 1836, Dacre who married Mary Watson in 1865, their first child Mary Jane was born in 1867 in New Zealand.

I have quite a lot more on this family, some my own research some passed to me by members of your family in about 1991.

All

Just had a look on the "useless" (personal opinion) National Burial Index and after 1861 there isn't many in Cumberland, if you find any give me the details and I'll go have a look in the Record Office, up here (across the road almost - well two roads)

If you want me to give you a list of all the burials on the Index, It's no prob

Hi Andrew

I have all the NBI version 2 burials for SCURR/SKURR. I have copied all the deaths from the GRO for SCURR and am on to SKURR at present. I think I know who each belongs to, but if I get stuck and need any info from the burials will give you a shout.

If you come across ANY info on SCURR/SKURR on your travels I would however be grateful.

Hi Lorraine,

My grandfather was William Simmons and his sister was Mahala Simmons who married George SKURR in Battle, East Sussex in 1919.  They then emigrated to NZ and had a son, Maurice.  I'm guessing that you are Maurice's daughter and we're therefore related!

Liz
