I'm a wee bit further along trying to find out what my late grandfather did in the war. I've found a few momentos one of them being his ration card.
Can anyone tell me what different abbreviations stand for, my google skills have failed
The front of the card says...
Army Exchange
Ration Card-European Theater
No: 08032 Date Issued: 11 Feb 1946
Name: Fallon John ASN: 1558872
Organisation: USAFE APO: 633
Signature Unit C.O.: Winston L Kirby
I know USAFE is United States Airforce in Europe do the other 2 numbers give me any clues as to where he was based?
Thanks, Pam

You can find out, from specialists in army covers, where APO 633 was at the date of sending. APO's move with the unit or command. The APO number is used to disguise origin from the enemy [hopefully]. When S. Africa attacked the German forces in South-west Africa in 1915, the APO's moved every two days or so, the advance was so rapid. USA APO 633 was in the UK in 1943, was in Wiesbaden in 1947 and in New York in 1962 - but my data is limited and non-specialised. The posting date will yield the right answer. ASN is Army Serial Number. Again I am no expert but a 7-digit number will usually indicate a regular soldier who was serving prior to Dec, 1940. Hope this helps. Victor

Hi Victor,
Thanks for this - gives me an excellent start. Sorry to be a dimwit but what does the APO stand for. I know my grandfather was groundcrew by the end of the war so I presume this was a support unit?
Thanks, Pam

pam,
APO is Army Post Office.
The navy had their own FPO Fleet post office.

APO 633 was the army post office for the US Air Force Strategic Command. In 1946/7 it was definitely in Wiesbaden - I have checked. The ration card number will yield no clue as to what work he was doing, nor will the other numbers.
