I thought Neasdon too but also thought the first bit looked short for Lancashire.  Is there a Neasdon in Lancashire ?

Had a look on a modern map - nothing like it in Lancs, also nothing in English Place Names book, only lists the Surrey one.

What is this from  ?  You might have to ask on the Lancs board.

It's off the 1861 Yorkshire Census. There are a few like this I'll copy another couple and post them, Maybe seeing some more might make sense of it.

Hi Christine,

I may have duplicated this posting..... apologies if I have.

The first post looked like 'LANEATH' (nearsde?Huh) which is in Wales.

Just viewed 2nd posting and it def looks like Lancash.....with a H or K
capital letter on 2nd word. Have you cross referenced handwriting
against enumerators legible handwriing in name sections or
did someone send it to you???

So glad you got an answer Fitty..
I can see it now - the loop we thought was an 'e' in the second word is part of the first letter - takes a while to get used to this old handwriting

The Enumerator in question looped every thing!   His K's look like R's...his L's look like small B's.   grrr!

The loops may be completely unreadable, but at least the census page looks pretty!
