For starters, here's Richard and family on the 1901 census:

RG13/405 - Folio 9 - Pg 10     55 Kennington Rd, Lambeth

Richard Bullen  Head  28  Cellarman (Public House)  b. Wantage
Amelia J Bullen  Wife  28  b. Lambeth
Victor C Bullen  Son  3  b. Lambeth
Harold M Bullen  Son  2m  b. Lambeth

FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl has a probable marriage record in St Saviour registration district, Mar Q 1894, with Richard Bullen and Amelia Jane Pratt on the same page.  If you want to order a copy of this certificate, the reference is St Saviour 1d 220.

I couldn't see Richard straight away on the earlier censuses, but I'll have a bit of a dig for him and Amelia once I've finished some of the housework, which is what I *ought* to be doing right now...  (Trouble is, genealogy is far more interesting!  Roll Eyes )

You could try looking for them - separately! - on the 1881 census, which can be searched freely at the LDS FamilySearch site http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=search_all1.asp&clear_form=true

That's the right baptism, although the family's a bit complicated...  Here's Richard  in 1891:

RG12/343 - Folio 36 - Pg 28    "Three Companies", Southwark

Richard Bullen  Head  58  Licensed Victualler  b. Riddlesdown, Surrey
Fanny Bullen  Wife  33  b. East Ilsley, Berkshire
Richard Bullen  Son  19  Barman  b. Wantage
Walter Bullen  Son  14  Scholar  b. Gloucester
Charles Bullen  Son  11  b. Clapham
Ada E Bullen  Dau  10  b. Clapham
Frederick Bullen  Son  6  b. Clapham
Alfred Bullen  Son  3  b. Lambeth
Mary A Bullen  Dau  1  b. Southwark
Caroline Lansdown  Servant  24  b. Clerkenwell

The right father, but the wrong mother...  However, if we go back to 1881, we find Richard Sr as a widower:

RG11/0375 - Folio 63 - Pg 47    Barnards Inn Tavern, St Andrew, London

Richard Bullen  Head  Wid  48  Licensed Victualler  b. Riddlesdown
George E Bullen  Son  12  Scholar  b. Wantage
Fanny Bishop  Niece  M  23  Housekeeper  b. East Isley
Walter Bishop  Nephew  4  b. Gloucester
Elizabeth James  Niece  U  16  Barmaid  b. Clapham
Alice James  Niece  14  Visitor  b. Clapham
Jane Hobbs  Servant  15  Barmaid  b. Clapham

Compare Fanny and Walter Bishop in 1881 with Fanny and Walter Bullen in 1891...  Perhaps calling his fiancé "niece" was a way of avoiding gossip?  And where is Richard Jr?  Huh

Continuing backwards, I found Richard Sr in 1871:

RG10/1267 - Folio 16 - Pg 23    Newbury St, Wantage

Richard Bullen  Head  40   Licensed Victualler  b. Croydon, Surrey
Jane A Bullen  Wife  32  b. Wantage
Alice Bullen  Dau  14  b. New York, America
Eliza Betteridge  Step-dau  8  b. Wantage
George Bullen  Son  2  b. Wantage
Harriet Mace  Servant  28  b. Earl Hanney, Berks
Francis West  Ostler  18  b. Abingdon, Berks
William Wise  Stable Boy  15  b. Lambeth

(Richard Jr was born after the census was taken.)  Does this mean Jane was previously married to a Mr Betteridge?  If so, Alice must have a different mother.

I haven't found Richard Sr, Jane or Alice in 1861, so maybe they were in the US?

More later, perhaps - this family intrigues me!

There's a probable marriage on FreeBMD in Westminster registration district, Jun Q 1867, with Richard Bullen and Jane Bettridge on the same page - ref. Westminster 1a  612.

It's not clear from this whether Bettridge was Jane's maiden or previous married name, so I looked for her in the 1861 census:

RG9/736 - Folio 32 - Pg 27    "Blue Boar", Newbury St, Wantage

William Bettridge  Head  26  Innkeeper & Farmer of 23 Acres  b. Wantage
Jane Bettridge  Wife  22  b. Wantage
Sarah Bettridge  Sister   U  23  Fundholder b. Wantage
Abraham Pumfrey  Servant  21  Ostler  b. Uffington, Berks
Martha Ireson  Servant  20  House Servant  b. Grove, Berks

So Jane was married to William Bettridge before she married Richard Bullen Sr, and Eliza is a daughter of her first marriage.

Richard Bullen Sr must have had another wife before Jane, and this first wife was the mother of Alice.

I haven't found these marriages on FreeBMD, but the index hasn't been completely transcribed for all years.

And more...

In 1861, Alice Bullen aged 4, b. New York, is a visitor in the household of Edwin Chandler (b. Cheltenham c1816).  Also listed as a visitor is Caroline Bullen, a married woman aged 27, b. London, whose occupation is given as Stewardess.  Presumably this is Alice's mother, and Richard Sr's first wife.

Hi
Richard Bullen Senior is my Great Grandfather too, My Great grandmother was Fanny Webb and I am totally convinced they werent married. She was Married and went as Bishop.
Richard Snr b Sanderstead, was christened in Warlingham in 1833
I am interested in someone looking up the passenger ships
and the American side for me. Very expensive to join Worldwide Ancestry.
I have access to Ancestry.co.uk so if any one would like any help let me know.
Please not that in the 1881 census he was transcribed as Ballen
I got it altered
