John Caple - Killed in the Great War 1916.
« on: Monday 26 September 05 12:55 BST (UK) »

I have been researching men who worked for Vickers Steelworks, Sheffield, England, who fell in the Great War.

I wonder if anybody could tell me more about John Caple - he was born in Derby and joined the Sherwood Foresters, enlisted in Derby. He was killed in the Battle of the Somme on the 5th July 1916. His body was never found and he is remembered on the Thiepval memorial to the missing.

Unfortunately, thats as much as I know - I don't even know how old he was - Any help would be appreciated.

The result of my research and details about John Caple can be found on
http://www.stannington.webitsmart.co.uk in the Vickers Steelworks section. It may be of interest to someone.

Thanks in advance.

Robert.

Hi Robert,
I think I may have found your John Caple.

1901 Census Derby  RG13/3215 Folio 70 (second page) Sch 42
45 Willow Row, Derby.

Caple John     single    17  Servant  Making & Selling Ice Cream        Derby
living in the household of Frances Gargoro    Ice Cream Maker          Italy

(In the transcript John's age is transcribed as 67).

To prove this was incorrect  I looked on the 1891 Census

RG12/2737  Folio 65  Sch 47
37 Willow Row, Derby

Caple   John     Head     married    41    Bricklayers Lab.      Battersey, London
"        Lydia      Wife         "            34    Dressmaker           Bargate, Derbyshire
"       James     son                        14   Bricklayers Lab.       Derby
"      Harriet     dau                         9    scholar                       "
"     Robert      son                          7      "                               "
"      JOHN       son                          6      "                               "
"    George      son                          5      "                               "
"   Joseph       son                      10 months                            "

JOHN CAPLE   Birth Registration  December Q  1884  Derby 7b  596

John Caple (the father) married  Lydia Sims  June Quarter 1876 Derby 7b 772

Lydia gives a birth place of Bargate, this is near Belper Derby.
This is the only family named Caple in Derby and in 1901 Census the parents are at 39 Green Street, Derby

Hope this is of assistance.

Hello Spendlove - Thank you very much, this is great news - good detective work.

I agree, you've identified John Caple. This would make him 33'ish when he died. I wonder how he made the switch from Ice Cream Maker - to Steel Worker.

At 33 I suppose there is a possibility he married, which I will look into.

Thanks again

Robert.

Local Derby Paper,  he was included in a list of  wounded soldiers. At this time he was still with 1st Battalion.

Hello again Mack.

I think you are absolutely spot on. Brightside is the area of the east end of Sheffield, where Vickers Steelworks was/is. So this is almost certainly the C. Savage I am looking for. The 1901 census also puts Cyril and his family in the Brightside area as well.

Thanks for looking this up for me.

Regards Robert.

If anybody on this forum could do a 1901 lookup for Savage in the Brightside Bierlow area. Cyril is aged 1 and Clara is 27. I'd love to know if he had any brothers and sisters.

Brilliant !!  Smiley

Mack, Prue - I can't thank you enough. This research I have been doing  is like a jigsaw puzzle, that may never be finished. Its input from outside sources, like yours, that gives me a nudge every now and again.

Cyril Savage

I've had a quick look for Lempsfield Road. There is a Limpsfield Road in Wincobank { Wincsbank (?) }

Also a very familiar trend is his fathers job. It seems a lot of sons followed their fathers into the Steel Industry - possibly the same company.

Ernest Godlington

Killed on the first day of the Somme, so I should be able to find out where & what their objectives were etc.

Thanks again

I hope to hear from you again.

Robert
