Sarah LADYMAN
« on: Monday 26 September 05 18:31 BST (UK) »

According to a family bible Sarah Ladyman was born 1 August 1842.  She married George Peskett in 1864 in St. George's, Hanover Square, Middlesex, England and they lived in Odiham, Hampshire.

The LDS shows her in the 1881 census for Odiham and her birth place is given as Deptford, Kent and her age as 53, making her birth circa 1828!

I have been unable to establish her correct birth details and wonder whether anyone is able to assist with this. Smiley

Do you have her parents names and her place of birth, then we could maybe trace her in the 1861 census Smiley

Unfortunately I do not have her parents names and the only other names in the family bible relate to her husband's family.  The only clue that I have is her birth place, which is given in the 1881 census as Deptford, Kent.

Hi Coonwarra

What information do you have about George PESKETT from the family bible?  Perhaps it would be easier to trace him in the census which might lead us to Sarah.

There is another George and Sarah Peskett on the 1881 census.....RG11/1890 Folio 111 Page 6. Her age is 41...... Hes in the army and in 1871 they were in Wellington Barracks, Registration District St Georges Hanover Square (where your George and Sarah married), may just be a coincidence but worth checking?

The census data that I have is as follows:

1881 Census
RG11 Piece1249 Folio15 Page24
Odiham, Hampshire
Pesket
George Head marr 51 Plumber/Painter emp 2men b Godalming, Surrey
Sarah Wife Marr 53 b Deptford, Kent
George Son 15 b Woolwich, Kent
Harry Son 14 b Plumstead, Kent
May Dau 12 B Plumstead, Kent
.........................................................................
1891 census:
RG12 Piece 953 Folio 12 pge 17
No actual address but the one above is The Bell Inn, Odiham
Peskett
George Head Wid 61 Plumber b Godalming, Surrey
George Son Unm 25 Plumber b Woolwich, Kent
Harry Son Unm 24 Painter b Plumstead, Kent
May Dau Unm 22 Dressmaker b Plumstead, Kent

These details definitely relate to my family as a living family member still has Bury Cottage, which is next to the Bell Inn in Odiham.

However, the family bible is very clear in stating that Sarah was born in 1842.

As far as I am aware 'my' George was never in the army although I cannot be certain of this.

1871

Warwick Cottage, Plumstead, Kent

George son 6 b.Woolwich
Harry son 4 b.Plumstead
Mary A JONES? servant unm 16 general servant b.Melsbury Yorkshire

That might solve it then .................. looks like George PESKETT was married twice Huh  You will need to purchase the marriage certificate to see further info on his other wife Smiley

George was married previously to Frances Williams and they had 1 child who died in March 1861.  Frances died 3 months later.

If they married in 1864 and he was a widower in 1871, then the 1881 Sarah would be his 3rd wife... Right?
George and Harry would be Sarah Ladyman's children, but what about May? I can't see her in 1871.

Yes - very well spotted indeed - I hadn't noticed this before.  Going back to the family bible there is in fact a death entry for Sarah in 1870 aged 28.

I wonder who on earth the Sarah living with George on the 1881 census is?

Perhaps a Sarah Whiffin?

March 1874
Woolwich
George Peskett & either Frances Mary Wright or Sarah Whiffin
1d 967

Just a possible, of course.
