One of my ancestors is listed in the PR's of Chester le Street 'of Whithill'.
Can anyone give me an idea where this place is, or was?

Hi Minor

Might it be Whitwell? There is a Whitwell House which is a district near Durham (also Whitwell Grange and various other associated places) This link from GENUKI http://website.lineone.net/~pjoiner/genuki/DUR/WhitwellHouse/index.html

gives some info on it.

Hope this is useful.

A 1907 ordnance survey map shows a "White Hill" between Chester-le-Street and Waldridge.

Also a Whitehill Hall between Ch-le-St and Pelton Fell.

Thanks to you all for your replies. I've looked at the links, and now have a good idea what the baptism entry refers to.
