HORS(E)MAN Norton by Malton YORKS
« on: Sunday 15 August 04 11:18 BST (UK) »

My G G G Grandmother was born, in 1831, at Norton by Malton.
She was baptised on 13th Feb. of that year. Her name was
Elizabeth Horsman. She had a brother Thomas, born 1827, again at Norton by Malton.

I know her fathers name was John Horseman, and that her mothers name was Hannah, but I cannot find her mothers maiden name. Can any-one help?

Many Thanks

JeannieR

p.s. Thanks Guys, for a super site. I am sure that it's the best
thing that's happened to me in my 18 mths of researching.       Thank you  ! Smiley

Thank you Kris,

I did have this name, but it was the Ann, instead  of Hannah, which was throwing me. Thanks for the confirmation.

Would I be able to find other information by joining York FHS? which I am thing of doing, or would I be better going to the Borthwick Institute? Travelling is difficult because of work etc

Best Wishes

Ann/Anna and Hannah are often used inter- changebly.

Fingers crossed,

Sorry Jeannie I am in Australia and can be of no further help with where to go from here. I just thought that marriage was a possible. I tried for your Harrisons, no birth at all for Joseph I'm afraid and no marriages listed for the place U suggested Josephs birth to be. Sorry I really dont know Yorkshire at all. Plenty of marriages New Malton and Yorks. Sorry I cant be of more help. Good luck with it.

I've had the same problem with Hannah/Anna.  We knew we had a relation called Hannah, in all census' she was Hannah.  In 1901 she decided to use her middle name (Mary) whilst she was on her second marriage (which didn't make it very difficult to find her!!!!).  We've just ordered her birth certificate and it actually states Anna Mary.  Not really surprising when none of the family could read or write!   With the guessing of her age at each census AND her marriages it's surprising we found her at all!!!

Thanks, Pam, Kris and Jen.

I had never actually thought of looking at Norton by Malton, for a marriage between Elizabeth and Joseph, but it makes good sense. It was the brides parish, and I suppose it was only natural, that they married there.

I still can't believe how far people travelled in those days!!

I have recently found out that there was a river boat that came down the Ouse from Malton to York on a regular basis, and a weekly coach.

Hi,
Not sure if this is anything to do with who you are looking for, but it may be a connection to your tree.
In the 1891 Census Index for Malton Yks I have:

Horsman Elizbth  25 YKS Malton 3974 106.

If you asked nicely I am sure someone will have the 1891 census and would be able to tell you a little more about her.

Regards
Happy Hunting

hi JeannieR
in the parish records it is exactly as  krisesjoint  says the only thing i could add is that they both left their mark, john was from norton and ann was from malton. if you find anything else on her i would be interested, nelson is one of the names in my tree
