I found part of the family in Ninette, Manitoba in 1911. It gave immigration date of 1906.
I know Edwinwas still in England in 1908 , his brother Richard in 1907 (but no certain evidence Richard emigrated too)

I have been looking for the Edwards/Smith group, but no luck as yet

Hi JJ

All the information I have for the Griffin Family is George and his wife Lavinia were born in Hull England.  They had four daughters Mabel and Enid born in Hull England and Olive born 1910 and Lavinia born 1912 both in Winnipeg..  They lived at 1000 Beach Ave Elmwood, Winnipeg, Manitoba from 1908 and Mabel is listed at the above address in 1924.   George Died 7th April 1922 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery all by himself.  His Stone is a Military one and says "Sgt George Griffin/beloved husband of/Lavinia Griffin/born June 1 1875 / died Apr 7 1922"

I have looked on the Manitoba BMD site but haven't found the death of George Griffin so I am not quite sure where he died.

He was in the CEF so I sent off for his files and also his discharge papers and unfortunately that didn't tell me anything either.

In the 1908, 1910 and 1912  City Directory is says "Griffin George Painter H.G. Richards & co h 1000 Beach (Elm)"  In 1919 and 1924 it just gives "Mabel Griffin emp Eatons r 1000 Beach".

I just really don't know where to go from here now.  I have been on and off this case for 2 years and just cannot get anywhere.   I have searched  just about all Canadian records for marriages of the four girls but haven't come across anything, also for anything on the mother Lavinia Griffin.  I do know they came to visit England for a funeral in 1927 but thats all.

I really appreciate what you have done and the advice you have given but if you can maybe shed anymore light on where I could possible look next then that would be a real bonus.

Once again thank you so much

Best Wishes

Have you written to the Cemetery to ask for his funeral records? They may give his residence at death, who paid for the burial plot, etc http://www.elmwoodfriends.ca/

Could this be Mabel coming back?

Hi Eillo,

Oh I do feel to be getting a little bit of a pain here, lol and I really do appreciate your help and advise, I will leave no stone unturned.

I do know that Mabel and her mother Lavinia came over to England for a funeral which was November 1927 so don't think that could be her.

As George was buried with a Military stone would that mean his wife couldn't be buried with him ?

I am going to email the Elmwood Cemetery to see if they can give me any further information, thank you for that bit of advise.

When I found his Enlistment papers on the Canadian site I thought maybe my luck was in and I was on a little bit of a roll but no such luck, lol.  Really I am no further forward.

After so long in searching for them I am not going to give up now.

Thanks once again

Best Wishes

Yes, don't give up....we'll all keep an eye out for these ladies...It is so much tougher with no sons to follow as names have changed....but hopefully those
marriage records will come up one of these days...Not sure how easy it is to
get those records released...but they have them, so find out.  All the Griffin gals
had rather unique first names...if you think they were married in manitoba, give
 it a shot!....whatchagottalose?

Re: 1911 Canadian Census All Family found and now in touch with them
« Reply #25 on: Monday 08 October 07 20:12 BST (UK) »

Hi All and JJ

Here is an update on my progess.

I did get it touch with Elmwood Cemetery and they said they could not disclose any information but did confirm that he had a Military Gravestone.

I have had an orbit (died 2002) for an Isabella Lavinia Gooch (nee Griffin) for about 2/3 years.  I found out that this is one of my Ladies, she was never referred to as Isabella.

My fathers Cousin had been doing some clearing out in the loft in March and came across an old envelope with an address for them in Ontario.  I looked through the online Ontario Newspapers and came across some death orbits.  Also for Isabella's it had her son as living in Carleton, Michigan, so I looked through the online phone directories and found two with the same initials.  I wrote a letter to both these people,  then about 2 months later one of them emailed me with information and also sent me some photos of them all in later life.  This gentleman is in his seventies and is not very good with the computor so a lot of information has been sent by snail mail.

He has now put me in touch with relatives in Barrie Ontario and everyone has been so kind in updating me with photos and information relating to this family.

I would just like to thank everyone who has helped me, pointed me in some directions etc.

Even though I have banged my head plenty of times with this family I have never given up and it feels good to be rewarded with lots of information etc.

Once again thank you all very much.

Love
Lynn
