Hi Alan
What information do you have on Elizabeth already? Later census/marriage/anything at all Any idea where she is likely to be? There is, as yet, no index to the whole of Kent so some idea of where to look would be helpful for anybody who might be able to assist

Casalguidi g’day Here is the dilemma
Elizabeth Dingley married John Richard Martin July 10 1859 (cert)
Elizabeth b Nov 19 1840 Oldham Lancs (cert)
Parents on cert Thomas Dingley railway workman Martha Collinge
Heres the twist Thomas Dingley & wife Martha can be found in chatham kent in the 1861/71 census Thomas b 1819 Berkswell Martha b 1821 Oldham Lancs With children John b 1847 kent Eliza b 1850 kent Martha b 1852 plumstead Thomas b 1855 plumstead Anne b 1857 plumstead Charles b 1864 Chatham
The birth certs of Thomas Anne and Charles show the parents as Thomas Dingley And Martha Lee? ? On Thomas and Annes cert the father Thomas Dingley his occupation is shown as a beer house keeper. And on Charles cert he is a rail plate layer.. So one cert fits as does the childrens ages and placement but the maiden name and fathers occupation changes???
We have a marriage for Thomas Dingley railway worker and a Martha Leigh In Oldham lancs dec 20 1839
Everything we have fits for the Kent family the only sticking point is the different names On the cert of the mother first 2 kids registered under Collinge and the last 3 under the name leigh spelt Lee on the certs.
I hope this makes sense, to me it smacks of a double marriage or a previous marriage Or two families of the same elk etc.
Whats your thoughts???
Regards Alan

1851
2 Arundel Cottages, Lewisham, Kent
Thomas DINGLEY head mar 32 railway servant b.Berkwell Warwickshire Martha wife 31 b.Cha(...?)ton Lancs Elizabeth dau 10 b.Cha....ton Lancs Samuel son 8 b.Cha....ton Lancs Sophia dau 5 b.Huggum? Kent (Hougham perhaps?) John son 3 b.Huggum? Kent Eliza dau 5m b.Lewisham
HO107/1591 folio 291 page 15
With regards to your dilemma, I wonder if the wife, Martha, was known by both COLLINGE and LEE ie. was she illegitimate, did her mother remarry, did her parents use an alias themselves? It's a thought that she may be one and the same rather than a different wife. Perhaps delving into her origins in Lancashire will be more fruitful?
Best wishes

Forever Searching
|

Hi Alan
because Martha was born before Civil Registration (ie 1837), I searched the IGI for the birth of a Martha COLLINGE/LEE (and variants) circa 1821, born in Chadderton, Lancashire (which is the Oldham area) and there is nothing I'm afraid.
The only thing I can suggest, is that you post a request for anyone going to Manchester Central Library, to search the Odham Parish Registers for her birth, using both names.
