Hi Sue,

Thanks for the info - it's always nice to find another relation.  Smiley

I've hardly looked at any family history for ages as I've just not had the time so I haven't got any further back.

My great grandparents are John Kirk (b. 1867 New Village, Newport, Howden) who married Laura Underwood (b.1865 Faxfleet).  John Kirk's parents are George Kirk (b.1835 Newport) and Mary Jane Pickhaver (b.1830 Green Oak).  George Kirk's parents are John Kirk (b.1802 Cottingham) and Mary Grasby (b.1803 Broomfleet).  John Kirk's parents are James Kirk and Frances Briggs who were married May 6th 1793 in Cottingham.

James and Frances had the following children that I know of, all born in Cottingham:

William Kirk (b.1793)
George Kirk (b.1795)
Robert Kirk (b.1797)
Henry Kirk (b.1799)
Ellen Kirk (b.1801)
John Kirk (b.1802) - my ancestor
Jeremiah Kirk (b.1804)
Martin Kirk (b.1809)

On the 1851 census Frances is a widow aged 79 living alone at New Village and gives her occupation as a retired farmer.

Have you got any further with this lot?

Jo.

Sasha, my next door neighbour (in Cambs) is a Kirk who originally comes from the Hull area. In fact, his father is still living there. Apparently the family were fishermen.

Hi Nick,

I'd love to know if there is a connection - can't you interest your neighbour in taking up this hobby?   Roll Eyes

My Kirk's were farmers but they moved from Hull (Cottingham) to the Howden area in the early 1800's.

I once spent a day in the records office at Beverley going through the Cottingham parish registers and there were lots of Kirk's, but I've yet to link them all up.

Jo

I do talk to him from time to time, mainly to see if there is any link between his family and my own E Yorks relatives, but apparently his dad is 'interested' in family history although not actively pursuing it. Next time he is down, I'll try and find out exactly what he knows and share it with you. Most people know the names of their grandparents and possibly even thier great grandparents, which should take it back to the 1850s or so. Watch this space. Neighbour is away on a cruise at the moment, so may be a while before I can collar him.
