forgot my website password
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 14:48 BST (UK) »

After a software glitch I started using Core FTP but I cannot logon because of authentication failure.

Truth is I cannot remember my password (these senior moments are getting more frequent) Huh

Where can I get a reminder please?

Bow,

Did you keep a copy of your activation e-mail ??

the password will be on there.

even if you deleted the e-mail, it might still be in the e-mail folder, but you'd need to know abit about hex-dumps to find it.

Apparently not.

Does this mean that I can no longer access my web pages?

At the moment it means you have to wait till Trystan sees this, then he can re-send you your password.

In the meantime, despite all admonitions about being careful, we usually tend to use the same ones all the time, so try a few out. You won't break anything !!

I work in the IT industry and work with lost passwords all the time.

A small hint for remembering passwords - make them something that is familiar to you but not to the general public.  We geneologists have an advantage, I use surnames from ancestors.  Currently I am using my grandparents surnames for most of my passwords.  I know what they are, but unless you're really close to me no one else knows what they are and I never forget them.  The only one you shouldn't use is your Mother's maiden name because that is often asked (especially here in the States) as a security question for banking etc.

.... but add a couple of numbers to it as well.

Proper words are not good !!

OK, so you then have the problem of finding a number you only know, but it makes the password more secure !!

One trick I have sometimes used is to deliberately mis-spell a proper word ....
but not where you would expect it   Grin

There is a facility for asking for a password reminder, in case you forget your password.

But to ensure that it really is you, who is asking, and not somebody else unlawfully trying to access your site, when you appy for your webspace, there is a question which you must answer, in case you forget your password.

This may be your pet's name, your spouse's middle name, your mother's maiden name, etc, etc, but you have to type in an answer that you, and only you can know.

If you do need a password reminder, then this question will be asked, and only you know the answer.

My guess, is that when you applied, you didn't read that bit closely enough, and of all the choices, the spouse's name was the default.  So you typed in something, and whatever it was, this was stored as the middle name of your spouse.

So now, when you ask for a password reminder, it asks you for the middle name of your spouse !!

Is this now a new problem, as I thought you had remembered your password ??

This is the password I need to get into the webspace manager.

I think I need to be there because something is seriously wrong and I am unable to upload any new files or change permissions using ftp.

If a file exists however I can upload a new one and the old one gets overwritten.

I do not understand what has happened because it was all working fine

I can never have given a spouse middle name because there ain't one

Hi Bow,

this is the form you filled in when you applied for your RootsChat webspace.

Can you remember which "password security question" you chose ??

I have trouble remembering what day it is today and unfortunately I did not file a copy of that form.

That aside, the information must still be in the system somewhere.

If it's not recoverable then the whole thing is a write off.  What I cannot understand however is why it has suddenly stopped working, because if I am unable to get in to change settings then something else has interferred.
