MAMME:
I live now in ONTARIO, CANADA and have for almost a year been looking into places in Shrewsbury. I KNOW my Great-Great-Grandmother lived in the Shrewsbury area. HERE is the kicker --> My Grandfather's (he was born there btw) HIS PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER was the HEAD MAID for the entire Castle for the Earl there... I know her last-MARRIED name but nothing else. IF you could obtain a picture of information of when she started working as well as stopped I would owe you a TREMENDOUS debt of gratitude. The last name would have been OWEN. The time she likely stopped working would have been somewhere I could guess about 1900 to 1920?? Perhaps earlier. I've looked everywhere else, but can't see any info from the Castle other than He himself.

My mathernal grandfather is now 92 and in a few months, 93yrs of age and still lives... Anything you can find would be much appreciated. Here is my e-mail:

E-Mail address removed to prevent spammimg - PLEASE use the Private Message facility - Global Moderator.

Again my thanks. IF you can photograph the page its on, that would be TREMENDOUS.

                  Signed,
                       Mr. Peter Blahut

Would you like some photographs of the Castle?

Kind regards

Hello again,

I have just found a local radion station's site that has some wonderful views of the Castle - in 360 degree panoramic view.  Here's the link:-

Just to keep you posted - I have put a request on the Shropshire Family History website asking if anyone knows whether the are records available for the former staff of Shrewsbury Castle.

As yet, I have had no replies.  Will have to keep waiting.

Just had another idea - I have also emailed the Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury to see if anyone there knows the whereabouts of any such records.

I will be in touch again soon.

Hello again,

I have received a reply from the Shropshire Records & Research Centre - this is what they said:-

Castle Gates, Shrewsbury, SY1 2AQ, England

Dear Mrs Lloyd

Thanks for your email of 12 September.

I have checked our catalogues, but unfortunately we don't seem to have records relating to people employed at Shrewsbury Castle.   In 1905, the Castle was owned by Lord Barnard.

You could check the 1901 census to see if she was at Shrewsbury Castle then. This is online at www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk   You can do
a limited search for free, but to see the full details you need to pay (70p per page I think). We sell vouchers which you can use for this site or you can pay by credit card.

We do have general sources which might help, such as electoral registers, baptisms, marriages and burials and indexes to birth, marriage and death certificates.  We also have lots of photos of the castle in the early 20th
century, which may be of interest.

We can search for information on the lady in these sources as part of our Research Service, but these will only give basic information (such as when she was born and where she lived at certain times).  Our Research Service costs £18 an hour, including copies of any information found.

Yours sincerely

Sarah Davis

Sorry that I can't be of any more help.  Perhaps when you find out her full name you could search for her in the 1901 census.

Hi Jan

After always thinking that my gran was born here in Stockport I have found that she was actually born in Shrewsbury, the address is Halls Court, Castle Foregate, Shrewsbury, if it still exists and you have time I would like to see the area she lived in as by 1901 she was I think an orphan and living in St Clares Convent.

Thank you

Hi Jackie

I will see what I can find out about Hall's Court, Castle Foregate.  I'm not familiar with the same so have a feeling that it might no longer exist, but you never know!!!

I will get back to you shortly.

Hi Jan

Thanks for your reply,  on my gran's birth certificate it is down as Halls Passage, if any help in 1920's which is last info I have it was Cotton Hill Ward (St Mary's district on birth certificate), probably right though about it not existing anymore.

Thanks you again

Could you give me the full details of the address off the birth certificate please. You mention Coton Hill, which is a different area to Castle Foregate so I want to make sure I'm in the right place!!!!!! LOL

Just a bit of an update!!!!

I phoned Shropshire Archives this morning to see whether they could help me pinpoint exactly where the property was.  BINGO!!!! a very nice lady loooked it up in the 1881 Gazeteer and the passage was situated between No 77 and No 76 Castle Foregate.

No 77 is The Britannia public house, and still stands to this day, but I'm not sure whether No 77 exists anymore as I am sure that is the site of The Royal Mail.  Anyway, the passage ran alongside what is now The Britannia and we think that it may still be there but the row of houses will be gone.

I will go and photograph the pub and see whether there is indeed still a passage next to it!!!!!!!  I am almost certain the new Royal Mail building is adjacent to The Britannia but, of course, my photo will confirm that.

In the meantime, would you please PM me with your email address so that I can send the photos directly to you.

Thanks.

Me again!!!!

Have a look at this http://www.francisfrith.com/pageloader.asp?page=/search/viewphotos.asp&townid=35185&cid=10&partner=uk

It shows old photos of Shrewsbury taken in 1891!!!  The black and white buildings still look the same today, but the rest has changed considerably.
