Hi Jan
Thank you very much for that, I have had a look at the photo's the first page is 1891 my gran Mary Brown was born in December 1890 in Shrewsbury, her sister Margaret born 1888 can find very little info on her family just seemed to have vanished after 1891 census until 1901 found two sisters in convent presume then they are orphans, then next time 1914 here is Stockport when she married my granddad, although still not found her sister.
If the pub is still there a photo would be nice knowing it was close to where she lived.
Again thank you for help.
Jackie

Jackie
I had another emailed reply from the Shropshire Archives and this is what they said:-
"Shropshire Archives Castle Gates, Shrewsbury, SY1 2AQ tel: 01743 255350 fax: 01743 255355 web-site: www.shropshirearchives.co.uk
please reply to: archives@shropshire-cc.gov.uk
Further to your enquiry about Hall's Passage, Shrewsbury, I have had a look at a couple of town directories which show that Hall's Passage, later known as Hall's Court ran from 77 Castle Foregate. I found it on an 1882 ordnance survey map of the town Ref: XXX1V.11 which shows that if you walk away from the town down Castle Foregate past Wharf Road you come to the Post Office Sorting Office on the right hand side. Just past this Halls Passage ran at right angles to Castle Foregate and was the first of three passages the other two being Pickens Court/Britannia Place and Bell Passage, these were all before you came to the old Ironworks which is now a housing estate. I hope this helps, you are welcome to come and look at the map if that would help. Alison James Archive Assistant"
Very interesting eh? ?
Haven't forgotten about the photo - will go tomorrow as it should be quieter and much easier for me to park outside the pub!

Hi Jan
Thank you for that, it is where you thought, don't go out of your way it is a very busy time now near Christmas. I have been in contact with Shropshire Archives myself on a couple of occasions trying to find information, they have been very good, but so much to find out as can find nothing on g grandfather, g grandmother, but do believe have found my gran's two half brothers still living in Halls Court in 1901 and one of them William in 1925 but where they went from there yet to find, I have wrtten to every Hodges family listed in the directory but with no luck, but had some nice notes back from people.
Thank you for the time you have taken to help.
Best wishes
Jackie

Hello again Jackie
I've had another email from Alison James, Archives Assistant at Shropshire Archives. This is what she said:-
"Dear Jan You can come and look at the map showing Halls Passage without a readers ticket and the only charge will be if you want a copy of the map in which case it will cost you 50p. I actually come down Castle Foregate on the way to work and had a quick look today, Halls Passage no longer exists and I get the feeling that the Sorting Office has probably been extended to cover it. However I think that Britannia Place is where the entrance to the Britannia Inn yard is now so perhaps that will give you some idea of what it may have looked like. In a book called Shrewsbury Street Names by John L Hobbs, Halls Passage and the other lanes in Castle Foregate are described as: "Factories and artizan dwellings sprang up in profusion, and the various courts and squares were laid out soon after the making of the Shrewsbury Canal in 1796. Much of this property was very bad, and a good deal of the sickness and mortality was ascribed to conditions prevailing in these narrow insanitary streets" It doesn't sound like the kind of place you'd want to live!!"
I drove there yesterday, armed with camera, but couldn't park anywhere It's one of the main ways to get into Shrewsbury town centre so gets very busy. I'm going to go there after work tonight - it should be much quieter at 7.30pm!!!!!!

Hi Jan
How very kind of Alison to do that, sounds very grim but may answer why my gran and her sister were in a convent by 1900, have found out that their half brother who was called William Hodges still lived in Halls Passage in 1926 but by 1928 No 12 was gone, (put a letter in the paper trying to find Hodges family and a lady replied with a letter showing the residents of Halls Passage in 1926)
Thank you for the trouble you are taking.
Best wishes
Jackie

Hi Jackie
What a great idea! I thought it would cost quite a bit more to get a copy of an old map - 50p is brilliant.

Hi Jan
If you get a chance to take a look where Halls Passage was would appreciate a photo.
Not getting any further with my research in the Shrewsbury area so think I am going to have to talk very nicely to my other half and have a day trip to the archives there.
Best wishes
Jackie
