James Matthews, Essex.
« on: Tuesday 21 September 04 22:02 BST (UK) »

Tried at Rochford - Great Stanbridge, Essex, England. (Essex quarter sessions) Convicted 7 years for stealing geese. sentenced 15/1/1828. Transported 1828 on 'Marquis of Hasting' arrived 12/10/1828. The convict transcript has his age as 2_ , not sure twenty what because of the writing but think it is a 6. He must have been born 1808 at latest as this would put him as 20 in 1828. I believe his parents were John Matthews, apparently a widower when he married Sarah Cotton, a widow. Unfortunately we are finding inconsistencies and errors when we go in to do our own research on what has been given as our family tree, which is annoying to say the least! Any help in sorting this out would be appreciated.

Hi: How certain are you of his parents? The reason I ask is that the Essex Record Office has these indexes to Essex marriages of that period:- (a) Boyds which indexes marriages in the county by surname of both parties (b) more modern transcripts for virtually all parishes in chronological order for each parish.
If you are in a position to check these out they may enable you to narrow things down. There is a fellow called Jack Baxter who compiled the (b) transcripts and who has an index to them which he will search for a fee.
If you google 'Essex FHS' you will find more details there

Hello,

Can I ask if you James Matthew married Eve Singleton in NSW?

My email address is edolan@optusnet.com.au

I was helping a lady this morning in the library who is a descendant of this couple.

Cheers
