New to Site!!!
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 09:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi there everyone

Just trying to find my way round the pages of Rootschat - all looks very interesting!!
I'm trying to research a baptism and parents of John French, born c1754 allegedly in Chiddingly but I'm having huge problems finding him.  He doesn't appear in the main church records for Chiddingly so I'm wondering if it's possible there are other churches to check that come under the Chiddingly parish?
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated please!

Welcome aboard! You'll find this site a fantastic resource!

Here's all I could see on the IGI:

John FRENCH

Birth:      1755      Chiddingly, Sussex, England
Death:         1838      Litlington, Sussex, England
Burial:     08 MAY 1838      Chiddingly, Sussex, England

     Spouse:     Catherine
Marriage:     About 1785      Of, Chiddingly, Sussex, England

but this listing isn't extracted from the records, but rather was submitted by an LDS member, so isn't verified. However it might give you somewhere to look!

Hi and welcome!

I had a look on the IGI and found the same record as gougy, but also an extracted record for John French (parents John and Elizabeth) born 7th Sept 1755 in Ticehurst, which is about 12 miles from Chiddingly.

Also this link http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/churchdb/search.html will take you to an online parish locator where you can find churches within a given radius of any parish.

Hope this is helpful.

What an amazing response - thanks so much!!
The church site sounds really useful - I will certainly check that out!
I am aware of the John French born in Ticehurst but not convinced he is the link I'm looking for.  There are also John French's born in Selmeston and Eastbourne but again I can't prove they are the right ones.  The Chiddingly baptism keeps cropping up but I just can't find out where.
Many thanks again for your prompt replies - I really am impressed!

Gougy- many thanks for your help and prompt reply - not sure if you got my original reply as it's not showing?  I do have that entry from the IGI but can't find any links to prove he is the one I'm looking for, although my gut instinct says that it is.
Really appreciate all your help in the matter - I'll keep trying and many thanks again!

There is a much smaller Chiddingly near West Hoathly, north of Ardingly.   I doubt if it will be that one but it is worth bearing in mind.

Hi there

Some of the very early census returns still survive in the 'Parish Chest' and Chiddingly is one of them.

Here is an entry from the 1821 Census for Chiddingly

Entry no 22
Cottage belonging to the Parish at Holmes Hill

FRENCH John, 63, Head, Gardener
............  Catherine, 62, Wife,
............  Henry, 22, Son

Entry No 71
Chiswells House

FRENCH William, 36, Head, Labourer
............  Lucy, 39, Wife
............  John, 15, son
............  Thomas, 13, son
............  Mary, 8, dau
............  Richard, 7, son
............  Martha, 6, dau
............  William, 4, son
............  Lucy, 3, dau
............  James, 1, son

Entry No 103
Alms Houses

FRENCH Ann, 20, Lodger
............ Charlotte, Inf

Please remember all the above came from the 1821 Census

Hope the above helps you sort out your Chiddingly Frenches

Chris in 1066

Hi Annieliz & welcome to Rootschat.
Just to illustrate the point Gougy made about the 'member submitted' in formation on LDS, this is the only marriage of a John French to a Catherine...from the Sussex Marriage Index (SMI) which seems to tie-in with Chris's first John French at Holmes Hill.

Mayfield, East Sussex,  Date: 11 Jul 1783:
John FRENCH
Katherine LAVENDER, botp  (B)

This would be the William & Lucy,

Wilmington, East Sussex,  Date:  7 Oct 1806:
William FRENCH
Lucy BAULCOMBE

Chiddingly marriages in the name of French are, interstingly enough, all female!

Many thanks to you all for such prompt replies and for making me feel so welcome!  The information on John and Catherine's marriage confirms what I had so that is good news; thanks for that Jane.
The information on the 1821 census was useful too - I hadn't seen the entry for Ann and Charlotte so that may well help - thanks Chris in 1066!
John's baptism has to be somewhere so I'll keep looking - you've all lifted my spirits!
