Please Help! Name of a place in Scotland.
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 15:22 BST (UK) »

Can anyone tell me if there was a Maryland(or close variant spelling or sound)  anywhere in Scotland in the 1600/1700 years?

I have been pursueing Scotland as the origin of my family line for over a year and a half and now there seems to be a possibility that instead of Midlothian, Scotland, it could be Midlothian or Scotland, Maryland. I can only hope this is wrong by finding a Maryland or close name in Scotland.

If this request will involve more time than anyone has ,at the moment, I would be glad to have some websites that can give the information, and pursue it myself.

Thank you so much----- Renee.

Hi Renee,

I live in Scotland but I haven't heard of a Maryland.

There's Maryhill or West Maryston in Glasgow but that's about the nearest I can think of.

Sorry.

Renee

There was a St Mary's Land in Edinburgh's Old town (in Midlothian, Scotland) until about 1900 then the buildings there were demolished and built on by Edinburgh University.  The 'land' part referred to old tenement type buildings of the time which were under multiple occupancy, I think that the area would have come under St Giles Parish of the time - the OPR's from there might help a bit.

best regards

The location is still referenced on the Edinburgh University campus map...

Hi Renee

Some more thoughts re location for you to follow up!

I searched for Maryland at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/  This site gives you old Ordnance Survey maps/placenames as at 1875. The search showed only two Marylands not in Scotland:

1. Maryland  ,   GLOUCESTERSHIRE
1. Maryland  ,   MONMOUTHSHIRE

I then searched for Maryland on http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ , a modern mapping site. Numerous hits but only one in Scotland - Maryland in West Dunbartonshire to the west of Edingburgh, above Glasgow.

I then went back to old-maps and looked at the Dunbartonshire county alpha listing of place names and they show a place called Maryhill. Whether this is connected to Maryland I have no idea!

Hope this helps!

Regards.

Thank you all for replying to my query about a place in Scotland.

I now have to go back to the beginning of my research on my ancestors and see if there was wrong place of origin listed on the LDS site where most of my information came from- as far as names and family members go. The Names and most of my family accounts are basically correct, with the exception of the discrepancy between Midlothian, Scotland, and Midlothian or Scotland, Maryland!

Once again, thanks for your help---- Renee
