court record houldsworth
« on: Thursday 29 September 05 08:15 BST (UK) »

hi can anyone help me ,sorry but the info i have is very sketchy as i don't know where to look ,i will tell you all i know:
an unknown Houldsworth was sent to Australia when he committed a crime of poaching.
His wife who's maiden name was Shaw and their children applied to go there with him
i know they had a child called Benjamin born c1850
The wife was born in Ilkeston Derbyshire but i suspect that the unknown Houldsworth was from Yorkshire (very common name from there)
i am sorry that this is all i have maybe someone could help me to find out more about them .Thank you

Found this one - its close:

Houlsworth, John - transported 1791 aboard 'Active' - tried in Lincoln 1789 - sentenced transportation for 14 years.  This convict probably died 1812:
V18122915 2A/1812      HOLDSWORTH      JOHNATHAN      AGE 47

I'll check through the musters and 1828 census tomorrow.

This was in the NSW BDM register:
V18111191 3A/1811      HOLDSWORTH      JOHN      BURDOCK      ANN      CA
Means in 1811 John Holdsworth married Ann Burdock at St Phillips Church of England, Sydney.

But they were too old for children:
Here are their death records:
V18261052 44B/1826      HOLDSWORTH      ANN      AGE 57
V18261054 44B/1826    HOLDSWORTH    JOHN    AGE 61

Going through the Colonial secretary's papers this pair are probably the John Holdsworth, a Lieutenant of the  82nd Regiment.

Cheers
Leonie

Another possibility:

George Holdsworth - 1791 Admiral Barrington - tried York 1789 - 7 years

But died 1791:
V1791393 4/1791      HOLDSWORTH      GEORGE

Still trying....

I found a record of HOLDSWORTH, William. Per "Earl St Vincent", 1820.

In 1824 he served about a year up at Newcastle.

He appears in the 1828 census as:

Howarth, William - aged 30 - free by servitude - transported Earl St Vincent 1818 - sentenced to 7 years-  Protestant - Stonemason - employed by N. Payton - living at Parramatta

Sorry its taking a while but it seems as if the name "Houldsworth" was probably shorted to Holdsworth or Howarth or Howorth.  Tracing the name through the records is rather tedious.

There is a Howarth, Benjamin who arrived 1830 Florentia (2), sentenced Lancaster 1830.  I can find a son, James, born in 1844 to him and his wife Sarah Clark.  They were married in 1844 at the Church of England at Hunters Hill.  Benjamin died (as far as I can see) in 1861 at Sydney aged 70.   In 1855 there was an infant, Benjamin, who died.  Unfortunately the record doesn't state who his parents were.   James died in 1919 in Gundagai.  Another possible son, Charles, died in 1922 at Bulli.

Taking a breather...

Taking another tack, here are two Benjamins born in the 1850s:

V18531730 56/1853      HOWARTH,   BENJAMIN      Father: SHEPHERD Mother: ANN
I suspect that this is a mis-transcription.

2856/1857  HOWARTH , BENJAMIN S
Father: JOHN
Mother:ELIZABETH
Location:CHIPPENDALE

The latter is the most likely.
