I didnt spend 2-3 hrs for someone else to use my work {Man of Kent} as a basis for their own thank you very much!
Moderator Comment: This reply on another topic started off an exchange of opinions.
I have split this from the original topic, as it was hijacking the thread.
Please remember the prevailing spirit of RootsChat: Helping and Tolerance !

Being pretty new here, I was unaware we had to all do our own version. Not used to contests myself. I shall make sure I don't add to"Your Work!!?" again.

gippeswyc: Perhaps a PM might have been a more diplomatic option in this case?
I'll admit that as a matter of courtesy MoK should have mentioned that he'd used your pic as the basis for his...but don't be harsh, as far as I know there aren't any "rules" as such for posting on this board. If we give people a break and be a bit gentler in mentioning slip-ups like this then we will be a more welcoming and accepting place for people to come and develop their skills.
You could instead feel chuffed that MoK picked your pic and none of the others on the board...I notice he passed over MINE
Love light and peace Prue

I wouldn't dream of using someone else's work without asking them first or at the very least giving them some form of credit as PrueM mentioned. In fact I wouldnt do it at all!
Matter dropped - perhaps this will guide peoples thinking in future.

It was made public for good reason, ie. to make people think about the issue a little more & no how members feel about such issues. I won't be alone on this one.
Unfortunately I think you will be alone on this issue.
The people here and throughout the whole of Rootschat are the most helpful, friendly, unselfish group you could possibly hope to meet online, and their only reason for coming to this board is to help others. It is possibly contrary to that spirit that you feel that your work is just for display purposes and not for the use of the group to achieve the stated aim of repairing the photos for the original poster.
I have posted several repairs and feel a sense of pride that others may take my work, some of it taking several days, not hours, of hard work, and use it and improve it so that the person who requested help gets as close to a perfect repair as is possible.
If you feel that this is not how you wish to contribute, it may be prudent for you in future to include a "copyright" notice (after getting the permission of the original poster who actually does hold all rights over the picture that is) across the face of your repairs so that others cannot use it, and only contact the original poster directly with your repair. That way your work is "protected" and no-one will be able to claim your achievement as their own while still seeing your efforts, although I know this would never happen here. I am 100% sure that no-one who reads the posts would look at the final work and not look at the in-between stages, and would therefore see your posting and know that it was you who created it.
It is obvious that you feel aggrieved by not having been given full credit for all your hard work, but such credit is implicit in the display of the previous posts rather than directly expressed. Throughout Rootschat you will find that information on genealogical searches is shared, updated and improved without a constant stream of "credit to so-and-so" or "many thanks to such-and-such" on every post. It is just how things seem to be here.
Once again, I am more than happy to let anyone use anything I post here in whichever way they think may be beneficial. I would not even consider the work as my "own". The satisfaction I get is not in the work itself, but in making whatever small efforts I can to help.
Hopefully you will see that no-one here would ever dream of taking credit for anothers work, and that soon you may feel comfortable with helping to improve the pictures as part of a group effort, rather than in an individual "look what I've done!" sense. It's much more informative and fun to see where it is possible to improve ones own work anyway. I've learned a lot from the additions to my pictures that others have done and actually look forward to some of the "updates".
This is a light-hearted, friendly, good-humoured and extremely pleasant place to spend time where requests for help are answered in an altruistic manner, and I for one hope that you will contribute many more repairs, so please don't feel offended by anything I have written above. There is no criticism intended, just a friendly (or ham-fisted, whichever way you may see it!) attempt to show that no-one is trying to take anything away from your achievement.

I swore I would never post in this forum again but this is a great posting, putting that to one side for a minute I have to fall on the side of the forum crew 100%.
All the repairs/restorations I have done over the last six/seven months I do not regard as my work they are for other people to make better should they wish.
The forum crew is a hugh mountain of knowledge & help but I cannot recall anybody from the bottom of the ladder to the top of the ladder asking for any type of acknowledgement to a picture repair upload. the only thing I look for is the original poster saying thanks to the crew, that puts a smile on my face and I would imagine the rest of them as well.
This is a free for all forum any rules or regulations must never be imposed.
Regards Ken
