Saunders and Sheen in Thame
« on: Thursday 29 September 05 22:16 BST (UK) »

Robert Saunders and Harriett Sheen (? Henley parish register was difficult to read) were both born in Thame in about 1820.  By 1851 they were married, lodging in Henley on Thames and had two children.

I can't find them in the 1841 census.  I haven't found a marriage, were they still in Thame possibly unmarried?  In 1851 their eldest daughter Elizabeth Harriett Saunders age 2, is not in Henley with them.  Is she back in Thame with grandparents?

Any help would be appreciated.  This branch of my family keep hiding.

Hello David -

The clue you're missing is that in any area it's likely that the Family History Society will have done some transcribing & indexing.  In this case the Oxfordshire Family History Society www.ofhs.org.uk has transcribed both the Henley registers and the 1841 census.

Here are your folk in 1841 courtesy of OFHS - see Search Services for a printout of the image.

1841 census - All present county
Search made on 07 October 2005 from Index dated 22/02/2005

Robert was indeed baptised in Thame in 1821 - Thame's on CD OXF-TH01 - see http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/pardata.html for parish coverage.

For the Robert/Harriet marriage - have you searched the GRO indexes?

Hi Wendy,

Welcome to Rootschat.  Thank you for the 1841 cnesus information and the CD reference.  I will look that up next time I visit the Berks FHS library if no-one on Rootschat has the CD.

I can't find their marriage on the GRO in the indexes. I tried the hard way some years ago using the large volumes in London as well as recently looking on-line.

There is one unlikely possibility in Wallingford 1838 but I can't match Harriett to that.

A visit BFHS search room today took me a step forward as I now have Robert born 1821 the son of Richard Wells Saunders and Mary Woolhouse (married 15 Jul 1816).  Also a couple of ganerations of Mary's ancestory.

I still can't find the marriage of Robert or any trace of a Sheem family.  I obviously need to go back to that original Henley entry.

Of course I now have a new problem.  The birth/baptism of Richard Wells Saunders.  Although I know quite a lot about him as he has number of entries in the 1844 Pigot Directory where he is Saddler and Harness Maker, Glass and China Dealer and parish clerk.

I have found the baptism of their son George Saunders 25 Dec 1842 in Thame which refers to Harriett as Harriett Sheen of Watlington.  Although later census would seem to indicate she was born circa 1820 in Thame. This is possibly consistent with going home to have her first child and to have it baptised.

I still can't find any record of their marriage in the GRO or any likely parish registers, nor any record of Harrietts birth.

Robert's father Richard Wells Saunders was base born to Elizabeth Saunders at Tetsworth where he was baptised 18 Oct 1889.  I have a reasonable track of him until he disappears before the 1861 census.

Using the new Oxford FHS database of wills.

http://wills.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/

I have discovered that Harriet Sheen who married Robert Saunders was the neice of John Sheen who died in 1868.  One of sixteen neices and nephews to whom he left his estate.
I have so far found two brothers for John namely Samuel who married Mary Ann Mears and George Cawood Sheen who married Emma Bowell.  Their parents would seem to be Thomas Sheen and Mary Woodward.

They all seem to have lived in the area surrounding Thame in Oxfordshire.  Thus I probably have Harriet's grand parents on the Sheen side but still don't know who were her parents.

I have reconstructed the families of the two brothers Samuel and James.  There was one moment of joy when I discovered that James had a daughter Harriet White Sheen which turned to sorrow when I discovered her death in 1839.

I think that I have found another brother Thomas who married Ann Blake at Sydenham in 1810.  He died in Worminghall Bucks in 1853 which explains why he wasn't mentioned in the will.  I haven't found any family for them and so Harriet may be one of theirs.

I have found the baptism of Harriett Mary Sheen STEVENS 23 Jun 1819 in Thame.  I am confident that she is right person because all of her surviving siblings, the children of James Stevens and Mary Susanna Sheen are also mentioned in John Sheen's will.

I still haven't found her marriage to Robert Saunders but their first known child was baptised in Thame 25 Dec 1842. I also have not found the marriage of her parents.
