If anyone has access to the 1841 and/or 1851 census for the Radford area of Nottinghamshire I would be very grateful for a look-up for the following person:
THOMAS (TOM) MAJOR, born c.1836 in Radford, although he is a little vague on his age on the later census returns - his father is either John or George Major.
There is some confusion about this family - I strongly suspect that his father is John Major and that he had two families on the go at the same time, one in Bulwell and one in Radford.
Tom Major marries in 1855 in Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, and stays there for the remainder of his life. I believe that the family previously had links with Kirton in Lindsey.
Hi The only Thomas Major about that age is as follows Notts 1841 Piece 860 8-24 Lenton Nottm George Major, Head, 25 Yrs Labourer (Y) Ann 40Yrs (N) Thomas 5yrs (Y) Louisa 2 Yrs (Y)
Y/N = Born in County I cannot find a christening for Thomas or a George/Ann Marriage. There is a Major family in Bulwell.
Thanks for that information - it's the first reference I have for a Thomas of about the right age, and from about the right area, with a father named George (bit of an age difference between George and Ann though!)
He names his father as George on his marriage certificate, but I couldn't find a baptism to fit. All the evidence I have so far seems to point to his father being John Major, who did seem to have two families on the go at the same time. My Tom, and a son from the second relationship, both ended up in Kirton in Lindsey and both married girls from the same family but gave different fathers names. So I'm not sure if Tom gave the correct fathers name, or if he was 'covering up'. I'm keeping an open mind and exploring both possibilities.
