Yes, Jean, John McFarlane would be my great-uncle.

Great photos by the way!

The Youngs and McFarlanes come together in my grandmother who, coincidentally, shares the same name as her neice on your second gravestone - Roberta G McFarlane.

The Mcfarlanes in my direct line are:

James  1864-1953
James  1832-1911
James  1800-1871

Thank you.

Hi Jeanp,  I am a new member and would like to know if you have found any Joseph Freemans in your travels 2 in Marykirk, 1901 age 75, one 1879, age36 at time of death and one 1885 age 65 Laurencekirk burial.  The one 1879 was born in Benholm.  So could be buried there.

Hello again,

Thanks for the clarification.
Where was his death registered? As you can appreciate I don't want to spend a rainy sunday afternoon in the cemetery, if there's no hope of finding anything.

Hi, Jeanp
joseph Freemans death was registered in Marykirk 24 -11-1879.  I had thought that you had a list of names,  I certainly was not expecting you to be going round the graveyard in the winter time, or any other time for that matter.  Thanks again for your help.

Hello,

Sorry for the confusion! No, I don't have a list and I really don't mind searching, but there's a bit more incentive if I think I'm definitely going to find something.

I will take a look for you and get back to you if I find anything.

Hi JEANP,

Have just started looking up my wife's ancestors in Kincardineshire and at the moment have 2 deaths in  Johnshaven, though whether they were buried there or at Benholm I don't know.

John Forsyth 10/3/1866 age 68, death registered at Benholm and Mary Forsyth (nee Bain) 28/12/1888 age 88, death registered at Johnshaven.
There are 2 other children that may show up, last seen 1891 Johnshaven, Duncan 58 and Elizabeth 55.

Any details appreciated whenever convienient.

Hello,

I have a plan of the kirkyard dated 1892 and quite a lot of the graves are named, there are no Forsyth graves unfortunately.

However, I will check Johnshaven cemetery the next time I'm passing and get back to you.

Hi Jean,
Thank you for responding, didn't know about the Forsyth family in that area, Catherine knew there was that name in the family but nothing more.
It was a surprise when we found that they came from Ross & Cromarty and ended up in Benholm/Bervie.

The one that we are tracing down married in Dundee and ended up in Berwickshire, quite a journey, the rest as far as I can make out stayed in Kincardinshire.

Regards,

Barry.

Jim,

I have recently come across a plan of Benholm Kirkyard dated March 12th 1892.
There are 2 Young plots marked on it, D Young which seems to be in a enclosure and T Young which is marked above 3 or 4 plots. I will check this out for you again and see if I missed the stones.

Jean
p.s. there are also a couple of plots marked McFarline.

Jim,

The D Young stone is quite a large obelisk! This the entry from the pre 1855 gravestone index.

Erected by David Young MD Surgeon Honourable East India Company's Service in memory of his father Jas Young for 52 years parish schoolmaster of Benholm d. 31.10.1855 83, mother Christian McGregor 4.11.1855 82.
Robert Young schoolmaster at Benholm from 1843-1873 d. 27.4.1900 85 wife Mary Ann Bartlett 24.3.1873 41.

We are on locking up duty at the kirk so I'll check the others out later today - weather permitting!
