Hello Carol,

Burials seem to have stopped c 1892 at Benholm so your Findlay brothers won't be buried there. Their ancestors may be, if you give more information, I could take a look for you.

Thanks

Hi There,

I wondered that if you were out and about if you could have a wee look for any Welsh's buried in Beholm.  I would be very grateful.  The Welsh's have lived in the area over the 19th century, so I cannot give you specific dates.
Only if you are out and about as I know how cold it is and there is no rush.
Many thanks,
Lynda

Thank you very much for your efforts.

It's too bad that it so hard to track down the final resting places
even when confirmed on the death record such as with
Isobel Beattie m.s. Kennedy.

Yor efforts are appreciated.

The Low stone and J Beattie are side by side and are obviously related, but the R Beattie stone is near the entrance to the Kirk, so I would say not related. It has become apparent that the names on the plan are the names of the purchaser of the plot, not the names of the deceased, so it is possible if you have an "R Beattie" that this could be yours.

What I thought was interesting is that the names mentioned in the notes in the pre 1855 gravestone index seem to be Farmers, "Stone of Benholm" being a farm just outside Johnshaven and yours being farmers too, Brawliemuir is a farm near to me.

Here are the Beattie entries in the Benholm Communion Roll Book 1884-1890

William & Mrs Beattie - Upper Birnie (previous addresses are East Mathers St Cyrus & Mains of Benholm) Farm Servant & Dom Servant.

David Beattie & his wife m.s. Eliz Walker - Balhagerty (previous address Moathill) - Farm Servant - They were admitted to the Kirk from Fordoun on 28.06.85 and left in February 1890.

Robert & Mrs Beattie - Woodside- Crofter- They were admitted to the Kirk  24 June 1888 from Marykirk.

Thankyou again.

For sure the Robert Beattie and Wife (Isabella Watt)
at Woodside are my g grand parents
and a couple of their kids were born Marykirk at Balmaleidie
            James    Beattie 16 Nov 1884
Louisa Ann  Roy Beattie 12 October 1886 m John Silver 1906

I don't see Balmaleidie or Balmaleedie on any map today
I wonder where it was. Same for Woodside croft.

The farm of Balmaleedy doesn't appear on the present-day map but go to www.nls.uk/collections/maps/index.html and navigate as follows:

1.  View map images
2.  Ordnance Survey maps 1847-1930
3.  Six-inch to the mile, 1st edition - 1843-1882
4.  Choose 'By zoomable map of Scotland'
5.  Enter Kincardineshire and Marykirk in the search boxes
6.  If you pan down once and enlarge, you'll see Balmaleedy is (or rather
was) 3 or 4 miles N.E. of Marykirk

Do you know which parish Woodside is ?

Hi again,

Woodside is about half a mile from me and is one of our nearest neighbours. The farm land was sold about 8 or 9 years ago , but the cottage still  exists and is habited.

Hi, that would make Woodside croft between which two farms?

again I have a high level of interest because of ny GG parents
living thier between 1884 and 1899 ish.

Also William Beattie and his wife Isobel Kennedy
farmed at Brawliemuir until his death bretween 1951 and 1955

it was then farmed in turn by his son charles Beattie who died 1871 at Brawliemuir born there 1819.

Well, Woodside is between 4 farms , Forgie to the south, Haremuir to the North and Tullo of Benholm to the East and to the west is Nether Tulloch. Brawliemuir is the next farm south after Forgie. Brawliemuir has holiday cottages if you fancied a break, www.brawliemuircottages.co.uk.

Hi Lynda,

Pre 1855 Gravestone index has:

Alex Reid shipmaster lost at sea near the Isle of Bornholm 13.11.1872 aged 44 -- wife ---(w)elch died --------- their son George d Montrose 21.2.1900 45 (west side) s Douglas d saffi Morocco 11.1.1901 37, da Isabella Anderson d Montrose 13.11.1904 38, da Annie Largie d Johnshaven 20.4.1906 46, s David d Brentford Essex 17.2.1930 63, Susan Jane d Johnshaven 22.6.1934 78 (widow of Geo Reid)

Also in the notes:
Testaments: Benholm was in the St Andrews Commissariot and the following were noticed in that index - Wm Welsh at Burnhead of Benholm, 1733

and I have transcribed this:

IN MEMORY OF
ROBERT GREIG WELCH WHO DIED JUNE 30 1893
SON OF DAVID WELCH AND ANN HAY WELCH, JOHNSHAVEN
ALSO OF HIS SONS DAVID 1915 & JAMES DOUGLAS 1916

If any of these are connected let me know and I'll get you a photo.

Hello Jean,
I am not sure about the Reids or the Welchs', as I have not seen it transcribed this way.  I would be interested in the Willliam Welsh c1733 though as this is one of my lines of enquiry.   The David and Douglas are also names that  have run through the generations.
Yhank you for this information and I will check out the details that you have sent me.

Kind regards and many thanks,
Lynda
