Failed to pull any information from Scotlands people as my mum is unsure of their marriage date. My mums granfather Patrick Morgan was murdered in Duntocher, and we are also unsure as to the exact date. We are going to the Mitchell library today to look at old newspapers. Hopefully we might get some dates for his death. Thanks for your reply. Jo x

hi Marjie & Jo,

Why not try scotlandspeople for Patrick Morgan's death certificate?

I had a spare credit, so I just checked for Patrick Morgan, DNB. and there are 4 results -

1 1903 MORGAN ANDREW PATRICK     M 34 OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0104

2 1873 MORGAN PATRICK     M 0 DUMBARTON /DUNBARTON 496/00 0122

3 1927 MORGAN PATRICK     M 78 NEW OR EAST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 500/01 0007

4 1944 MORGAN PATRICK     M 44 OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0197

is he one of them?  My bet is number 4!
And as you say he was abt. 42 when he died, that makes the 1 year old in the 1901 census for Duntocher a good candidate to be your Patrick.

and here are the only 2 Patrick Morgan marriages in Old Kilpatrick between 1916 and 1931.  Looks like your Jessie may have used the name McArthur instead of Black?

1 1921 MORGAN PATRICK MCARTHUR JESSIE OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0112

2 1922 MORGAN PATRICK NEIL WINIFRED OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0016

And finally - with my very last credit!!

Here is the possible marriage between Patrick's parents Arthur and Mary in Duntocher -

1 1887 MORGAN ARTHUR & SMITH MARY OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0039

Now you can find the family in the 1891 census.  Looks like Mary Smith was born in Duntocher, so you should be able to find her in the 1881 census easily as well.

Hope all this has set you on your way!  Good luck with the research, and make sure you keep us all updated on your findings.

no worries marjie!  I had 3 spare credits, and nothing to spend them on, so consider it my gift to you.  One day, you will be able to pass on the favour to another researcher.

Now head on up to scotlands people, and buy those certificates for yourself.  They will give you an absolute wealth of information that will keep you busy well into the wee hours!

Are you still living in Duntocher marjie?  or is it just your daughter that stays there now?

Helen's and my Uncle George (wee Geordie) Stewart lived on Hillend Crescent in the 1950's.  he was married to Greta McGrory.

Glad that you are so thrilled with the information we have been able to dig up.  I don't see how you could have possibly been at a brick wall marje, that was real simple stuff to find.  Smiley

All the information is readily available at scotlandspeople, and you have the added luxury of having close proximity to the Mitchell, and the New Register House in Edinburgh.
Helen is in Australia, I am in Western Canada.

A lot of the Scottish church registers have been transcribed, and are available at www.familysearch.org on the IGI index.  Not all the registers are on there though.  Catholic registers are sadly lacking, but the years 1855 - 1875, plus the 2 census years of 1881 and 1891 are all available as those certificates were all filmed.

Wait till you start trying to find the families in Ireland.... that's the tough part!

Keep on digging - if you find any Stewarts, Coyles, Cuthbertsons, Mochans, McGranaghans in you family names, we are probably cousins.
Dig far enough in Duntocher, and we will ALL end up being related!  tee hee..   Smiley

Marjie,
If the 1881 Census is your family - Hugh was born 4th Jan 1867, and John was born 19th June 1869.
