All roads lead back to Ireland!

Debbie,
Many thanks for that. I agree with your sentiments exactly - the damn Gallaghers do not give up their secrets particularly easily!! I laughed at your comments about the lack of choice when it came to names - rest assured that my wife and I have broken that particular mould.
You are not the first to comment on my Grandmother and the "sweetie shop" - many others have mentioned her too - I think she was something of a legend in Duntocher (the power of the sweetie huh?).
My Grandparents lived on Auchentoshan Avenue and that was where they were when my late father and his siblings were born. The folk you mentioned from Dalgleish Ave were probably the Cairneys as several of then either lived or still live there (I visited them when last there in 2005).
Let's keep in touch and share news if anything crops up - I am more than happy to share/help in any way I can. The potential connections are amazing are they not?
Cheers.

Yes, the "power of the Sweetie" certainly did give your Granny a legendary status among the weins of Duntocher.   Grin

We were last over in 2003, the year before my Mum passed away.  My Granny, and Great Granny's family all stayed on Auchentoshan Avenue as well - they lived at #22.

Absolutely keep in touch!  And always post your stories and new finds on the forum, you never know what memories it will twig in another researcher, or where your next cousin might be found.

Hi Debbie
It is possible that if you are a Coyle from Duntocher we could be connected.

Leagleeagle and I are 'kissing cousins' - not sure of our exact relationship.

I live in England, but lived in Duntocher when I was a child.  There was an Isa Coyle who lived in Carleith Ave and she moved to America C 1950/60. I remember Isa had a wonderful voice and sang at local concerts.  I cannot judge her age but she would be in her 70's and is still alive.  Are you any relation to Isa?

Regards

Hi eilean donan

Yes, my Coyles are all from Duntocher.  I'm not related to Isa though - I don't think!

My grandparents were Charles Coyle & Maggie Stewart.  They both died in the 1950's, their children were all Duntocher folk as well - Gretta, Catherine, Annie & Tony.
They lived up on Dalgleish Avenue.

My great grandparents were Anthony Coyle and Annie Coyle (yes a Coyle married a Coyle)
Annie came from a big Duntocher family - the daughter of Bernard Coyle and Catherine McGranaghan.
Of course, the lot of them were originaly from Donegal.

Wow!  Nice lot of Cassidy's and other Duntocher names there!  Smiley

My Mother's great friend at St. Mary's school in the 1930's was Annie Cassidy - they used to tease each other by finding worms and chasing one another.
Much better than video games - don't you agree?  LOL!  Grin

Hi Leagle1,

It seems that we're related.  My great great grandparents were Peter Gallagher and Ellen Quigley and my great grandfather was Edward, Charlie Gallagher's elder brother.  I'd be very interested in any information which you may have.

Hi folks,
I'm still pretty new to all this family history business but have been looking into my paternal side of things initially and I've come across a few ancestors who come for Duntocher.
My own family name is Duffy and we come from Clydebank but tracing thing back I have found a few Gallachers from Duntocher.
My great grandparents were Partick Duffy and Rose Ann Gallacher.

Rose Ann was born in Duntocher 1878. She had nine siblings:
Catherine born 1859
Mary born 1861 (in Ardrie I think)
John born 1863
Thomas born 1865
Patrick born 1867
James born 1870 died 1876
Bridget born 1874
Michael born 18/2/1876 died 22/2/1876
Joseph born 1876 (twin to Michael).

Their parents were Thomas Gallacher born 1836 in Ireland died 1919 in Duntocher and Mary Handlin born 1840 (Ireland I think) married 1858.

Parents of Thomas were: Thomas Gallacher and Bridget McBride.

Parents of Mary were: John Handlin and Mary Cougan.

John Handlin father was Arnold (I think) and Mary Cougans father was Michael (again I think).

I don't know if anyone can shed any further light on any of these, but any information that can be gleaned would be most appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

I forgot to mention ...
Mary Handlin's  (Hanlin/Hanlon) father John was with Thomas & Mary Gallacher during the 1871 Census, Old Street, Old Kilpatrick.
He was listed as 85, born Ireland.

Hello, I'm new here.  Very intersted in all the previous replies.  No connections to my family so far though.

I'd really be interested to know if anyone on here has any recollection of a family called McDermid.  Mum and Dad John and Margaret.  Children:  Barbara (my great granny), Donald, Sarah, Patrick, Mary, Christina and Isabella.  All of these children were born around 1885 - 1896 and all have addresses at Veitch's Court, Duntocher.  I have more information on them if anyone has any connection or handed down memories.

Thanks

Hi Debbie,

I wonder if your Dochertys are the same as mine.
Daniel Docherty Ag labourer born Ireland (1810 - 1821) married to Ann Docherty ( nee Morran or Morraw) born Ireland about 1810.  Children William born 1839 Ireland, Catherine born 1841 Ireland and Thomas born 1845 Ireland.  The family are on the 1851 census living at main street, back court, Duntocher.

Catherine married twice.  1st to James Campbell in Duntocher on Oct 28th 1859 and then to Daniel Gill .  She died 28th Feb 1926.

I would love to hear from you about your Dochertys.
Julie

Hi, I am in middle of doing my family tree, I am quite interested in what you have in Morrow/Morron as i think it is Morrow- I have so far on mine
Philip Gill and Bridget Morrow, son William Gill

William Gill married to Mary Marshall - her parents were Richard Marshall and a Mary, cant work out surname

I have Docherty somewhere - I've a Sarah Docherty married to William Duffy, Sarah's parents are James Docherty and Catherine Docherty nee Kane. William Duffy's parents are William Duffy and Margaret Duffy nee McDade. As you can see my forum Duntocher- Duffy as you may see some more links if it is what you are looking for and if we have the right connection as I am still working out if this is my family tree as I'm working from my dad's parent's names backwards- which goes to William Joseph Duffy Married to Elizabeth Murray, as I've focused on my dad's family tree- his parents William Joseph Duffy married to Mary Gill-

Then I've William's parents- Edward Duffy married to Annie Mc Murray
Edward's parents Edward Duffy married to Catherine McDade, Annies parents Torrence McMurray married to Annie McGuire?

Mary Gill's parents- William Gill married to Mary Marshall,
William's parents- Philip Gill and Bridget - can't read her surname.
Mary's parents- Richard Marshal and Mary- can't read surname either.

Hope someone has a lead on this to fill my holes!

I'm trying to track down information on John Stewart.

According to his death certificate, he was born in Duntocher in 1817.  However, the 1851 Canada West census has him being born in 1821.  He died in June 1873 in Lanark County, Ontario.

His wife was Agnes Currie, born in 1821 in Lanark County, Canada West.  Agnes' father was a Daniel Currie and her mother was Jane Stewart.  Both of whom died in Lanark County, Ontario.

That's all I've got, which isn't much.

Thanks.

I am descended from Hugh Gallagher through his daughter Ellen who married Hugh Molloy in Donegal before moving to Glasgow and then Duntocher.  My mother was born in Duntocher in 1927.  She is interested in contacting others and sharing her history of the village.

Hi
My Gran was Mary Duffy(nee Kelly- lived in Duntocher all her life) and was a cousin to Maggie Malloy.  I think both girls might have worked at the Mill when the were very young. Granny was a full cousin to Charlie Gallagher. (We all have to be some sort of ''kissing cousins''!)

My mother Teresa was born in  Duntocher in 1925. I have contacted  Mums cousin Margaret Kelly ( lived in Hillend Cres) who now lives in Leeds and put together various bits of a family  tree.

I live in England but visit Duntocher; I was  in Toamme last year and took  some photographs. I would love to exchange information and also learn some history of the village.
Love to hear from you soon.

Regard Ros
Merry Christmas everyone
