Hi Debbie,
Thanks so much for the IGI info - I was beginning to have doubts that my Gt Grandad Alexander Kennedy born in 1855 was the wrong family connection, since there is also the same name born in 1856, to an Archibald Kennedy married to Ann. I do believe the names of his brothers/sister are indeed our family line as my dad has heard of a Gt Uncle Niel and Donald.
As for the Maclure connection, her death cert will hold that vital clue! Kind regards
McVitie

Hi Debbie,
Have just got the downloaded image. Different parents names, but here's details of her death as follows:-
Name - Mary Kennedy, Widow of Donald Kennedy (Crofter/Carpenter) Died - 20/11/1871, at 5 o/c in morning, Calligary, Sleat. Age 47 (born circa 1824). Name of father - Niel McLure (surname spelt without an "a"), Schoolmaster, Deceased. Name of mother - Abbie McLure (nee Nicholson), Deceased. Died of (I think it says) Typhus Fever (10 days) Informant - Donald Kennedy - nephew to deceased, of Calligary, Sleat.
Even more extraordinary, the person above Mary's entry is her husband, who dies on the same day!!
Details as follows:- Name - Donald Kennedy - married to Mary McLure. Died 20/11/1871 at 1 o/c in morning, Calligary, Sleat. Age - 65 Father - Alex Kennedy, Crofter, deceased. Mother - Christy (can't read clearly) Kennedy, nee Buchannan, deceased. Dies of Typhus Fever after 8 days. Informant - Donald Kennedy, Nephew, of Calligary, Sleat.
I can't believe they both died on the same day within 4 hours of each other - my dad will certainly be shocked to hear all of this!!
Hope this connects us somehow Debbie - too much of a coincidence if not!
I love this genealogy stuff - there's so much to discover, and so rewarding when you do!
Kindest regards
McVitie

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for all the McLure/Nicholson info - that will save me a huge amount of time.
Interesting question about Niel possibly being your Malcolm's brother. I will delve deeper and see what I can uncover, but as you say, records pre 1855 are not as easy to get hold of.
Presumably if we could find both their birth entries, then maybe connect them through their parents, but without knowing their exact DOBs, it would be difficult to pin them down to a specific date. But that's what makes this family history such a challenge.
Thanks again for the info - If I come a cross any McLure names in my travels I'll let you know..
Kind regards
McVitie

Hi McVitie,
I have already checked for the birth entries. The Sleat Parish Register film starts in 1813. At the beginning of the register, the new minister notes that his predecessor, being soft in the head, (or words to that effect) had burned all previous registers, and he was forced to start anew.
So, I tried to tackle it a different way, and ordered from Scotlands People almost every single McLure death and marriage for Sleat that was available, in hopes of tying the early families together by parents names reported on the certs. Worked fantastic! But unfortunately, if they died, or married before 1855, we are out of luck on that avenue as well.

Hi Debbie,
I suspect that the old minister was a little affected by the local firewater! why on earth he would wish to destroy all that valuable info is plain crazy.
But we'll keep on plugging away - thanks for all your help so far.
Kind regards McVitie

Hello Debbie
My forebears were Macphersons from Sleat. Janet (maiden name McPherson) died 1880, married to Martin McPherson from Miningish (d. 1869). I've got details of their offspring but maybe they're too late for your records.
I'd be very interested to know if you have anything that might help.
Roddie

I have a record of a Donald Nicholson whose son Neil married a Mary McLure. They had a son John Nicholson (1790) who (m 1810) Meron / Marion McInnes - daughter of Malcolm and Margaret McInnes of Heaste.
Do you have any other McInnes connections in your files from Sleat / Strath including Drumfearn area please?

Yeap... Neil (m) Matheson is the son of Miles McInnes (m) Marion McKenzie. He was originally from Leitir Fura where his father Black John McInnes was one of the last occupants. (relocated by MacDonald in circa 1792 to Drumfearn). Neil was one of 6 or 7 boys I think it was and one daughter Catherine who married a Donald McInnes from Heaste across the loch, (son of Malcolm McInnes (m) Margaret Buchanan).
This Malcolm was also related to Miles of Drumfearn and I have all of this somewhere. The Nicholson / Mary McLure bit I copied in last message is recorded along with Angus Nicholson's family in the front of his bible from Drumfearn (he emigrated to Picton, Australia). He was a son of the John and Meron (nee McInnes) Nicholson's mentioned.
Anything you have on any McInnes's would be appreciated to add to my growing jigsaw puzzle and if I can help in anyway please advise - email is augustus@slingshot.co.nz
